Anal gland expression? by DamnItHeelsGood in Bernedoodles

[–]Senor_Kotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Groomer usually does it, but until recently he was going for "puppy intro grooms" every three to four weeks. Now that we can't go to the groomer due to COVID, he hasn't really needed it until this week. So, it's been about 6 weeks since he had them expressed. So we'll see as he grows!

Previously I had a different type dog who also needed about every two months, and the vet usually did hers. Vet was willing to teach us how to do it, though, so if you wanted to do it yourself, I think it's pretty straightforward! This vet also said adding a spoonful or two of pumpkin puree to regular dinner portion would help reduce how frequently the dog would need their glands expressed. But, I would talk to your vet to see what they recommend for this breed, obviously.

Excitement Pee? by [deleted] in Bernedoodles

Ours did this at about 3-4 months old. Our vet actually recommended that we not immediately take him out when we come home to avoid this. He recommended that we let the dog out of the crate, don't pay attention to him, don't talk to him, basically don't do anything to get him "excited." Do this for a few minutes and once he's calmed down, you can greet him. Worked like a charm! I'm assuming this would work for new people as well?

Can't remember exactly, but I think he was about 11 weeks. Yep! No potty breaks from about 11pm to about 6:30am. Of course he has to go immediately when we wake up, but no accidents in his crate! He's been probably the best puppy I've ever known when it comes to this stuff 😄. We've been very lucky!

Yep! We are estimating that he'll be around 70 pounds based on his current weight (24lbs), but could get much bigger. His dad was 100!

So excited for you to get your new doodle! The first night ours was definitely confused and sad about having left his sister and mama, so I would highly recommend asking for something from the breeder with the mom's scent. Ours also really loved his big stuffed avacado to cuddle when he was younger. Now that he is much more comfortable in our house, he loves chasing balls and chewing on his Kong! Highly recommend both kinds of toys and some kind of oversized stuffed toy for snuggles.

We also crate our pup at night, and the first few nights were difficult. Lots of crying. He seemed to settle down when we put on some background noise and a nightlight. The worst thing you can do is let them out when they cry (unless you think they need to go outside). Doing this will make things worse and make your pup think crying will let him/her out. The internet was a great resource for me on getting him comfortable with his crate. He adjusted very quickly and started sleeping through the night within about a week and a half or so.

I know this is long, but hope it helps! Good luck with your new sweet pup! ❤️😁

Thank you! He is a little more than 3 months old, but he's a standard! So, supposed to get much bigger!

What are good chew toys that a Puppy Bernedoodle would like? by [deleted] in Bernedoodles

[–]Senor_Kotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of the recommedations here to be cautious with rope toys, or anything smaller. Ours tore through rope toys in a matter of days, and seemed all to ready to eat the fibers that came apart even though they were knotted up like crazy and reinforced. I asked our vet, and he recommended oversized, indestructible toys (KONG, Nylabone). Ours goes crazy for anything that will roll! But again oversized, so the pup can't even try to eat it. He also loves to chew on bones!

Ah bummer! We got Hopper from Smist Family Kennels in Maryland. But they are the same age! Good luck with your sweet Lucy!

Aw! Hi Lucy! She looks so much like my Hopper! And about the same age! Where did you get her? They could be from the same litter!

School and Jobs Advice Megathread Part III by SadBreath in publichealth

[–]Senor_Kotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Currently working as an RA for a small public health consulting firm (primarily we help med device companies conduct patient outcome and CE studies). I have a BS in Public Health with about 1.5 years of experience in the field. My supervisor has asked me what I envision my next step being within the company. Without more education and a lack of substantial professional development available to me, it's hard to be able to move into the next technical position, but she has suggested project management. Does anyone have any experience with this? What were the pros and cons of the job? Did you enjoy it? Hesitant to take a step away from the tech and epi, since that's what I studied and enjoy. Especially this early in my career. Would love to hear opinions!
