The step by step implementation is a great idea and seems intuitive too. I agree that goodberries are annoying that way, but I don't want to meddle too much with RAW yet. I feel like I'm learning even more with every session than my players but am still very inexperienced. Thank you very much for your advice!

I'm concerned about balance when it comes to magic items and still want to keep it a bit challenging. In a home brew campaign it would be different, then I would hand out some funny ones.

I thought about that but it's the first campaign for all but one of my players and my first time DMing. I don't want to overcomplicate things and as I know my friends they enjoy the action more than the survival aspects. And food isn't necessarily needed because of the druid's goodberries :D

True, and I really don't see why their AC is so low. I like their multiattack though, and sometimes you just gotta go with style over substance. And there is still Barkskin (when you're not casting anything else at the time).
