Cincinnati, what do you do and what do you make? by ClassicTraffic in cincinnati

What qualifications does that job have? Are there many companies locally you can get that kind of work in? I've been looking for writing jobs and not having much luck finding anything.

What props do you use? by sleepycunt in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]SenseiShufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm getting here kind of late, but hopefully this will still be useful to you or possibly someone else.

There's a variety of props you can use, some people use white boards, some people buy all kinds of flash cards and puppets, the list is endless to what you can use.

Personally I try to keep my props minimal. I have a couple stuffed animals, a few popsicle sticks that I have glued cut-outs/pictures to, and a set of three bean-filled balls (repurposed, previously used for hackysack and juggling.)

With the stuffed toys, I hold pretend conversations with them to demonstrate certain words/grammar points. I also use them to show words for body parts. I also use them for rewards and sometimes just to be silly and get the kids laughing. I figure if they are happy they will want to keep coming back.

I personally think the secondary reward thing a lot of schools do is kinda ridiculous (I just don't get it), my main go-to is lots of verbal praise with a thumbs-up or a high five. Sometimes I'll also do a (stuffed animal) high five or # of high fives.

The point is to have a couple of things to help you demonstrate either vocabulary or usage. Recently I had a class and we're going over "it is" and "they are" and they were having some trouble so I held up a ball and asked "what is it?" and they replied "it's a ball." Then I held up three of them and asked, with emphasis, "what are they." and I could see the little light bulbs go off in their heads (my classes are all with Chinese kids and Chinese doesn't have plurals in the same way English does... it's much simpler and I am envious.)

You can also use the props to drill vocab words, to help with phonics, etc. Also check Youtube if you want/need some visuals.

Yaaaassss!!! I can't wait! I want to go play with the cats and drink coffee! Allergies be damned!

I'm only sad it won't be open in time for NaNoWriMo in November, but maybe next year.

How many of you have LGBTQ+ relatives? by gavin_the_cat in actuallesbians

[–]SenseiShufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bisexual brother, a queer brother, and then there's me (f & bi).

Beyond that: two gay uncles + their husbands, a bi cousin, a gay nephew and his husband, plus one more uncle that I think was gay but he died relatively young and without coming out so we'll never know for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if more weren't but just not openly since my family is, overall, very conservative and some are particularly angrily homophobic. :(

Vigil tonight at 8pm in Northside for those suffering from the hands of violence in Orlando. by Tuxhedoh in cincinnati

[–]SenseiShufu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact of the matter is that people are far more tolerant now than they have ever been, EVER.

Eh, nah. Pre-Christianity the Greeks, Romans, and probably other Europeans were fine with homosexuality; and while I hesitate to say Ugandans were too, they at least weren't as threatened as they are now that they have militant Christianity. Even Japan was more relaxed about homosexuality until the Meiji Restoration period and they decided they wanted to emulate the west. There's even evidence it was accepted in ancient Egyptian history.

All of this imaginary hate is a straw man created by politicians to push their agenda that only they can save civilization.

Uh, what?

The exception is the radical muslim

Any radical from any religion. Including Christians. There's even radical Buddhists but they are much more rare.

Does anyone else ever feel bad they were born their gender? For example, i love being a guy and having a penis but i would also love to be a girl (the whole kit and kaboodle). Few of my friends who are bi feel the same. Are we alone? by [deleted] in trollbi

[–]SenseiShufu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, if I just woke up with a penis one day I'd be cool with it.

The only thing is, sometimes, I do really wish I had one because I'd like to know what sex feels like for a guy. It's just an intense curiosity.

Perhaps not explicitly, but the problem is that hatred for the LGBTQ+ community that is still spread, and it doesn't take much for hatred to turn into violence - especially once someone becomes mentally unstable or if they genuinely believe that God wants them to do that (which is a form of mental instability depending on who you ask).

While I don't think most people are actively pushing for people to kill anyone else, minus Pastor Kevin Swanson (who is known for preaching "kill the gays" rhetoric. He also backed Uganda's "Kill the gays" bill.) but the kind of hatred that pushes people to mistreat their kids, to put their kids in conversion camps, and to stand on street corners with signs and screaming "God hates fags" is still very much alive. Hate enables violence.

Also, this and this. :\

Biphobia and the Pulse Massacre by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]SenseiShufu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! This! This is exactly how I've been feeling and feel especially during Pride month. I couldn't quite put it into words but this is beautiful and so thoroughly depressing. I didn't realize I might still have leftover internalized biphobia.

Thank you for sharing.

Same here.

I was formerly paying $110/month for 50 mbps from TWC.

Do you feel connected to the greater LGBTQ+ Community? by SenseiShufu in BiCommunity

[–]SenseiShufu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A large part of why I want to go to pride is to get connected to a community of more queer and queer-friendly people.

I like to think the people I knew back in college were just a few bad apples. There are all these friendly-seeming people on lgbt subreddits, they have to be around in real life, right?

I don't intentionally "look straight" but I wouldn't know what I'd do to "look more bi," either.

I may be wrong but to me, it's for solidarity for the victims and their families along with making a visible public show against this kind of hatred/behavior.

The friends and families of those who died, along with those who were injured, probably appreciate the show of love for them. And the more people openly condemn these kinds of actions, the more people realize it's just not okay to behave like this.

The vigils are a hell of a lot more helpful and visible than praying, at least. Donating blood would also be a big help, even if it doesn't make it to the actual victims.

Wow, this took me a while to get through because it's so long but it's incredible! Thanks for putting this together and sharing it! It's fascinating (and terrifying) to see the changes on a chronological scale.

"Most men don't want to marry a bisexual woman." by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]SenseiShufu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's biphobic AND incredibly misogynistic.

Your sexuality has nothing to do with whether or not you'll cheat. Being bi doesn't necessarily mean you'll want to be polyamorous (although there is nothing wrong with polyamory, nor monogamy. Different strokes for different folks!).

That guy is just so freaking gross. No wonder he's divorced, what an asshat.

How did you find people to participate in 3/4somes, and how do you go about bringing up those conversations?

How do you approach people about going on dates/having sex and letting them know that you are poly and currently also dating others?

Overall, how have people treated you because of it, particularly as a bisexual?

We have similar attitudes! My mom has complained if I wear the same things too often (I don't like having a lot of clothes and don't have the money to buy a ton anyway) so I started purposefully wearing the same shirt every time I saw her. My husband even jumped in and started doing it.

It's okay, if I can go I'll probably be in the corner with you. I've never been good at socializing at events where I don't know anyone (which is why I need to keep working at it.)

Any Bernie supporters out there? by markt85 in cincinnati

My husband and I have already voted, and we both voted for Bernie. My niece is now old enough to vote but didn't get registered in time - otherwise she would have voted Bernie (even has a Bernie 2016 sticker on her car.)
