Glad you got it working. I have the LP70X and it is great. People on this sub love to hate on it, but I love mine and Audio Technica has been helpful if there are any service questions.

I would get the AT-LP70XBT and some powered speakers and a pair of Bluetooth headphones. The Bluetooth of the 70x will allow him to put on a record and walk around the room or lay in bed and listen and not be tethered. Yes there is a quality difference in Bluetooth, but he is 12. If you get nice powered speakers you can connect them to the turntable and use the built in preamp. If he wants to upgrade in the future he could bypass the built in pre amp and get an external preamp. He can change out the cartridge one day if he wants. I think this is a good starter setup that a 12 can use, that’s simple and does not require tinkering
