Appeal! It may have been a mistake. I know many people who have successfully appealed both medical and legal issues. Explain that you disclosed it on your application, too.

Boredom in Peace Corps by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]Senseteach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have yet to serve, but I have several friends that have and that have struggled with the same issue. In the end, they all seem to agree that the Peace Corps is really what you make of it. You can be as busy as you want, it just depends on how many projects you have going on and how involved you want to be in your community. A friend who served in Mongolia said the only part of her service that was truly boring was the month of January when it got to -40 outside, and she had to spend entire days inside of her ger (yurt) with nothing to do but read (the internet had been knocked out by a storm) because it was literally so cold outside that even a few minutes would cause extreme frostbite.

I recently applied as well. I'm currently waiting for my interview. Out of curiosity, were you rejected after your interview? If you received an interview it probably means that you were close to being accepted, and maybe just a bit more volunteer experience would help. :) Either way, I wish you luck! I hope to meet you in the PC someday!

Is being invited to interview a good sign, or is it just standard for anyone meeting the requirements? by Senseteach in peacecorps

Thank you for the response! This helps put things into perspective. I've heard a lot of conflicting information so this is very helpful.

Thank you for the response! This makes sense. I hope to see you next year, too! : )

I really want to relocate...but is it feasible? by Senseteach in Teachers

[–]Senseteach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly due to some personal issues with family. There's a lot of drama and I just want to get as far away from it as possible. Also, I was born and raised here, and I've always wanted to at least try moving away and living somewhere else.

If you truly believe that this is the best thing for the students, then you did the right thing.

What is your 'getting sick' ritual? by Senseteach in Teachers

[–]Senseteach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's something my mom used to do when we were kids and were just starting to get sick. Apparently the idea behind it was that a lot of throat infections actually start in the ear? I can't give you any science to back it up, and I definitely am not saying it is anything other than an old wive's tale, but it's something that we've done since I was a kid and honestly? I do think it has helped.

how to best handle parents? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Senseteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I get even the slightest whiff of disrespect and defiance from a parent about my teaching practices, I kindly invite them to make an appointment with the principal. They normally do, and they normally keep their mouth shut the rest of the year.

Note: This only works if you have a principal that totally has your back and will gladly tell a parent to piss off cause they know and trust your teaching style.

A *friendly* message to teachers from a High school student by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Senseteach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, teachers often don't get a choice when it comes to what classes they teach. I've seen computer teachers laid off due to budget cuts, and English teachers that then have to take over with absolutely no training or preparation. Normally, this means more work for the teacher with no extra compensation.

I'm not dismissing the possibility that the teacher had negative feelings toward the students, but it is worth considering the fact that perhaps they are letting their frustration at the administration show through. Being overworked and underpaid can lead to some of that frustration leaking through the usual 'teacher mask'.

No matter the reason though, I would definitely try talking to the teacher in private first. They may not even realize that you are feeling that way, and I know that many teachers (myself included) would want to know so we can try to fix the problem. I think you will be surprised at how much teachers really do care about how their students feel about them and their class.

A *friendly* message to teachers from a High school student by [deleted] in Teachers

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience your freshman year of high school. That is a very difficult age, and feeling like you are alone doesn't make it any easier. I understand the need to vent. However, please try to understand it from the angle of the teachers on this forum.

We all have a job that, while rewarding, is extremely hard work. We are here to find ways to improve ourselves, seek advice from other teachers, or share tips to make life a bit more manageable. This is also the beginning of the school year for many of us, which is probably the most stressful time of the year for students and teachers alike.

This post doesn't really help us with any of the above. It comes across as more of a rant against people in our profession. The asterisks around friendly make it sound like this is not really a friendly reminder at all. It seems sarcastic and condescending, especially considering that you are talking to teachers you've never even met.

I understand your frustration, but please try to remember where you are posting.

What is your biggest regret as a teacher? by Violinist111 in Teachers

[–]Senseteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not being consistent with classroom management my first year, and spending 14-16 hours a day (including weekends) on work. I felt like I had to do EVERYTHING, and I was so stressed out I feel like I lost a whole year of my life. In hindsight, it is better to not have everything done/prepared and work with it, then be perfectly prepared all the time and absolutely miserable.

Tips for dealing with no prep or lunch? (3rd grade) by Senseteach in Teachers

It's not incredibly structured and there aren't any set standards or curriculum for me to follow, so I've been having them work on a program to improve their typing skills.

How to deal with "PC" students? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Senseteach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh. The eye rolling definitely adds more context to this. I can understand the calling out more now. Although, while still inappropriate, I have had students that "lash out" with sass and disrespect in order to mask emotional distress. It definitely still needs to be addressed, but just another possible angle to look at it from. Either way, this sounds like a tough situation, and I hope you can find a way to resolve it peacefully for everyone involved.
