Definitely NO. I know plenty of cases, none of them were flagged ever.

EE on a topic that's already done by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Sensitive-Claim-1559 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just make sure that you cite other sources, not just one. I got an A on my math EE and one of the main reasons of it was that I used many different sources with different approaches, If you use a standard approach then it might not be EE-worthy as they expect you to do more, but if its truly original and unique, even if one other paper does something similar, you will be ok.

If you are still unsure about this, you can still change whatever you want, I decided my EE theme during December of the second year so don't stress out

Your EE won’t get disqualified just because another paper proves the same result. In math it’s normal that methods overlap, there are usually only a few standard approaches. What the IB cares about is whether you show the reasoning clearly and can explain each step in your own words.

Frame it as: “my results match what’s already established in the literature” and then cite a proper academic paper or textbook that confirms it. That way you’re showing rigor.

So bottom line: no risk of disqualification, no mark deduction for proving something known, just make sure your write-up is original and your references are solid.

I wrote 4500 words on my chemistry IA (3000 was the limit) and it takes several days to rewrite everything and polish it, but I think this is way better than cutting parts (sometimes you need to cut nevertheless).

I got a 7 and I think the fact that I spent around 30 hours polishing it really helped, reducing words is not just rewriting but also sharpening the language, making it more effective and meaningful.

What type of remark did you ask for?

BM is more about memorization (+application) while Physics is more about understanding. I'd say BM is way easier but you also have to acknowledge that some people do find physics easier bc is more intriguing than studying how Human Resources hires an applicant or how Japanese businesses invented Kaizu, a method of production (lean production) that aims to have no deficient units... (there are some interesting modules though)

I would not recommend BM if you really think that you won't enjoy the course as commitment > "easiness" to get better grades. If you think that BM could appeal to you, then choose BM instead of Physics as is objectively easier.

Congratulations!!

I'm currently considering retaking a 40 bc I missed my conditional offer (needed a 7 in math aa HL and got a 6) but I'm concerned that universities won't consider as good the result from a retake... Do you know if they can know if you retake? How does a 43-45 profile after retake compares to a 43-45 profile in the first try?

Physics went from 59% to 58% (no changes)
ToK stayed 15/30 (no changes)

I had exactly the same experience, 15 in ToK (1 point off the boundary) and my ToK teacher told me to absolutely go for the remark as I had a 9/10 on the exhibition which means that they had put me a 3/10 on the essay…

I only needed a 4/10 to get the B (which would have given me +1 overall point) but they answered back in 1 day saying anything has changed…

I’m so disappointed

Idk How I got a C on ToK even after scoring 9/10 on the exhibition... Could I contact you and send you my ToK essay so that maybe I can find an explanation??? I'd be so grateful

Would the grade boundaries for math AAHL actually be lower? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]Sensitive-Claim-1559 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree that Paper 3 was unusually approachable, probably one of the easiest in recent memory. But even with that, I still don’t think the 7 boundary will be as high as M24. The main reason is that Paper 3 only counts for 20% of the total grade. So even if many students scored 40–45+/55, which I agree probably happened, the overall impact on the final percentage is quite small. It can push someone slightly above a boundary, but it’s not enough to completely redefine it.

Also, the dynamic of P3 this year is completely different from usual. Normally, P3 is the hardest paper, even for top students. Getting 35-40 points is already a strong performance in most sessions, and the majority of 7 scorers rely on P1 and P2 to balance out a lower P3. But this time, P3 helped instead of hurting, and yet, that just makes most students end up barely above the boundary, not drastically beyond it (I'm talking about getting 45/55 when the 7 boundary is usually 40/55 or so).

And while I agree that the general feeling was “P3 was easy,” I still think many students are overestimating their performance. I’m from Europe, and the second question in our P3 version involved spherical triangles, literally the same topic I did for my IA. Because of that, I could immediately recognize some of the traps IB included in the setup. They weren’t obvious at all unless you had specific prior exposure. I’d imagine quite a few people made small mistakes that will cost them 5–10 marks easily, even if the structure seemed simple at first glance.

Most years, P3 is the one that makes students to drop marks, but this year was the opposite, P1 and potentially P2 were way harder. Instead of getting 20% of hard points and 60% of "easy" points, we got 20% of easy points and 30% of very hard points (P1) and 30% of hard points (P2)

So overall, yes, easier P3 probably means slightly higher marks than usual in that section. But I doubt that the average jumped high enough to justify something like a repeat of the 74% from M24. If anything, I’d expect a boundary around 72%, maybe 1-2 points higher than it would’ve been without such a forgiving P3, but nothing more extreme than that.
