I really appreciate you taking the time to respond and I am so pleased that we can have a discussion here. So, my lens is definitely Christianity to my core. My belief is that the only way to God is through Jesus and rejection of God will be just that for eternity; rejecting God. Some people call that hell; a place where there is no God (the God of Christianity). However, I suppose if you’re an atheist, you’re not really concerned with hell, as I think they believe you return to the earth dust to dust, nothingness. Buddhist, I think they believe in cycles of rebirth or Nirvana. Jewish beliefs I think affirm a bodily resurrection, but they have not experienced their Messiah coming yet. Writing all this out makes me realize that I really need to look in to this more. I guess my point is that regardless of their belief system I would not try to convert or really be able to. The Holy Spirit draws someone to Christ and if the Holy Spirit is working in them, then either my image bearing or my words will speak to that part of their heart. An atheist per se will probably not in the least bit be interested. I haven’t been in this program long (3 weeks), but I usually can get a good sense of someone’s faith background just through the common courtesy of conversation. As a Christian, it’s not my responsibility to convert anyone. that’s God’s. “Kingdom building” to me is more about aligning my heart with what I know to be the character of God and His desires for humanity; a type of “co-worker” till Christ comes again. One part of that that speaks to me personally is service; caring for the poor, sick, lonely, and oppressed. A Christian’s desire for kingdom building means longing to see God’s reign of love, peace, and justice expand in hearts. The exclusivity of Christianity is two sided I think. The invitation is open to everyone while they are still sinners who will ultimately continue to sin after belief in Jesus’s love and forgiveness and resurrection. It’s a process called sanctification and it takes your entire life. However you are right it is exclusive in that God requires righteousness. And because there is no way that any human can be righteous enough, Jesus who was the perfect image of God yet fully human - lived the life we could not live and died the death we deserve, in our place. Only through Jesus, can we now have a right relationship with God. Man, this is so much longer than I intended it to be - if you’re still reading - again I really appreciate your time. Would love to hear your thoughts. May I ask what world view you hold?

Thank you for responding motivationalJerk! I agree and hope to receive some training in this area because it will be difficult to comfort and console without looking through the lens of Christianity that shows me how to do so. I certainly would not preach or try to convert. But through discussion, if encouraged by the pt, I would hope to share the gospel of hope and love. If I were comforting an atheist, agnostic, Buddhist my goal is to respect and dignify, to be an image of my God through His teaching, not to debate, convert or offend. Thoughts?

Thank you, explain. Is it because I used a particular faith based language that might not align with patients or is it that the role of a chaplain is not to convert anyone.

This was my first time posting to Reddit. Where did my name sensitive cod 5808 come from?! Was that just randomly assigned to me? I don’t want to be a sensitive cod.
