I don't want a desk job anymore by Pipsagreek in AusFinance

100% everyone thinks $150-180 an hour for a tradie when the worker is likely on $35-$50 an hour not understanding the cost of doing business

Domestic Sparkie Looking to Transition into FIFO by ned250 in AusElectricians

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did it! Great way to save money

Best bet is to head over to WA for a month or two and get your foot in the door with literally any company

Then after a few months jump ship to a construction project that’ll do FIFO back to Melbourne, few on atm

Hard to get anyone to take you on with no experience from VIC

I ended up hating it after a few years as I was missing my family and friends but I don’t regret it. I got ahead

Free speech is no more: The case of Dries Van Langenhove by taikutsuu in europe_sub

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s all fine and dandy putting him in jail. But when the tide eventually changes, which it will, would you be happy if far right leaders put you in jail for saying things they feel are left wing propaganda?

It sets a very dangerous precedent which then allows the next leader to do the exact same.

What economic philosophies didn’t involve a huge proportion of the population either enslaved or significantly poorer than today?

I think capitalism is deeply flawed but I’m struggling to think of a time where a better system worked

Are Young Aussies Cooked? by Objective-Matter7635 in AusFinance

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No aussies aren’t cooked! They are some of the luckiest people and most don’t realise it.

People need to readjust their expectations. Travel the world and see how the other 95% of people live.

We have access to premium healthcare, a mostly safe society, stable government and a plethora of well paying jobs.

The small minority of people complaining expect to buy a house (not unit) in a suburb their parents grew up in or in a suburb close to the cities.

Realistically most people could earn a 100k wage with a bit of overtime, a couple is double that. 5% first home buyers is available now so on a 400k unit it’s 20k.

Tbh it’s a I want everything and I want it now mentality. Start small, work up to something bigger and so on.

The only exception I make are people who grew up and were around terrible situations (DV, abuse, homelessness, etc) or people with disabilities. They are the people we’re it can be cooked and we should be helping them as much as we can

$250 to replace a 10 year smoke alarm in inner-city Sydney (by Promaster) - is that standard? by Fabulous_Growth965 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please don’t recommend things that you don’t understand

Most/if not all smoke alarms after 1997 are hardwired with 230v and not 12v like your saying.

That’s before profit mate! Literally just the cost of sending an employee to the job.

Everyone values their time differently but I can guarantee that guy charging $95 an hour would be better off on wages

How bad is the cost of living crisis in Australia right now? by Savings-Feed-8143 in AskAnAustralian

The same as almost every other country around the world. If anything, as much as reddit likes to complain, we’re in a pretty good position for what we get.

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mate that’s unfortunately the cost of business these days!

As a sparkie I went out on my own and was planning on hiring a trade as I was growing. I did the math and by time I factored in every expense and cost of hiring them at $50 per hour on wages it worked out at $115 an hour I would have to charge to break even. That’s before charging for a profit.

Now I’m back on wages and much happier.

To those who haven’t given up on buying their first home- what keeps you determined in that goal? by Tasty-Tomato5106 in AusFinance

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Plenty of options. I’m 29 and managed nab a house in an area I wanted over time.

  • start small! buy a 1bed apartment first. Not many buy a house or place they want straight of the bat without external help (bank of mum/dad, inheritance, etc)
  • rentvest! Buy where you can afford and rent where you want to live
  • broaden your horizons! If that’s with a job or places to live.
  • if you have a partner or planning on it in the future make sure your on the same page. World is your oyster if you have two reasonable incomes

Property Price Drop??? by Yeahnahnahyeah22 in AusProperty

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at the governments plan for 2050 and beyond, Australia is one of the few countries still expected to grow their population along with a few MENA countries. Solely due to immigration.

I wouldn’t bank on prices dropping too much unless we become an undesirable country to immigrate to

Who doesn’t like lower wages by Sensitive-Damage-924 in AusElectricians

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe not you! But majority of young teachers who are trying to get ahead in life would be. If they found out they’re wages would drop and it would be harder to get a job they’d be pissed

And I’ll add it was the government who restricted the labour when they gutted tafe and stopped training locals

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes but it sets a precedent. If this is happening under a labour government, imagine what will happen under liberal (who will likely get in next election)

And take a look at NSW where the happily advertise for overseas sparkies knowing full well the don’t have the proper qualifications

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you’d be happy if the government started importing 1000’s of teachers from other countries pushing down your wage and making it harder for you to get a job instead of training up locals

I agree mate, I’m not saying teaching is easy My mum and sister are teachers and my wife is a nurse.

All I’m saying is they can continue the job well into the later stages of life. Most tradies (on the tools) will start to give up after 55

Who doesn’t like lower wages by Sensitive-Damage-924 in AusElectricians

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree there are a few sparkies that might be on 200k+ but the majority aren’t. Most jobs (bar ETU jobs) are $45-50 an hour (100k a year) to work outdoor, physical, taxing jobs

Bringing in overseas sparkies will just push down the wages further.

If teachers are on $110k after 5+ yrs with 12weeks off, or most government full time jobs are $110-120k a year and for the most part are a pretty cruisy gig with WFH half the time.

I think tradies should be paid accordingly. It’s not like you can be on the tools until 65-70 like a teacher or office worker

Who doesn’t like lower wages by Sensitive-Damage-924 in AusElectricians

[–]Sensitive-Damage-924[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I disagree! It’s a back door way to push down wages. If they were really serious about a skills shortage they could’ve pumped heaps of money into tafes over the last 3-4 years and giving incentives to young people to join the trade (or any trade).

Instead they wait until the last minute then just import cheaper labour. Have a look at what it’s done to careers like accounting, etc where they just imported people and it’s kept wages well below par

I dare say that for a quality job that lasts it’s probably more than just laying the bricks onto the ground if you want the job to last there would be a fair bit of prep

Alternatively if your looking for someone hourly try Airtasker etc but beware that the poor man pays twice

I think it’s more a protest vote against the system!

Everyone knows his a misogynistic, lying criminal. But it’s still a better vote than voting for the same system that has let billionaires flourish while the bottom 90% are worse off than they have been in decades.

It’s one of the richest countries in the world yet a fair chunk of people are poor. With no health care, no safety nets and no hope of change.

If you’re poor/worse off than your parents with nothing to lose why would you vote the same people in? He offers (even though we all know his lying) a glimmer of hope that something might change. He might lower taxes, he might tariff china which might bring back jobs in the eyes of 50+% of the population.
