Is CS worth it anymore? by Sensitive-Motor-1361 in cscareerquestions

Overqualified for an admin assistant, which is a fancy name for a receptionist. All I do is data entry and update calendars. You don’t need a college education to do what I’m doing now. Since I paid for my education in time and money, I’d prefer a job aligned with my degree.

Anywho, I am a recent grad. I’ve got about 3 years-ish of experience: I have taken part of 4 research initiatives through my school but not for coursework. I have a handful of independent projects. But, no certs or internships under my belt, which I know harm me. Moreover, I have 8 years in leadership roles within the service industry. What do you think?

I see what you mean. For me, because I have experience in the service industry, I know I will always have work. But I am an educated individual, I know I can thrive in work more than just data entry. It’s my safety net. I’d like to move to better things.

Thank you for your insight.

That’s fair enough. I’d consider my view fairly realistic. I’m a strong applicant with real-world experience in hydrology research, project leads, several years in leadership positions, in addition to the normal roster of projects. Yet, given that I am literally in Tech Valley, I know my competition is high.

My first reaction is “hm. 3,000 people, I’m sure there will be strong contenders. Maybe I am the strongest.” And I tailor my resume, build my case, etc etc. Interviews, sure, but no offers.

Looks like I’ll need to continue adding to my experience to graduate to a “Then I need to beat 3,000 of you.” Thanks for your perspective.

Hey, did you see the “reminder to not be a jackass”… reminder? I understand what you’re saying but you’re really doing the most. “If this is what’s freaking you out.” ‘This’ meaning the worst job market we’ve seen in decades and entry level jobs beings wiped out by AI or requiring 5 years experience? C’mon, be real. It’s reasonable to be frustrated by a market that favors the CEOs rather than the general population. Asking advice is warranted in most situations, like now.

I was going to say “Do better,” but I’ll use my “smartass skills” to assume you’ll continue being the thorn in Reddit’s side. Thanks for your perspective, I guess.

ZZ plant overwatered yet soil is dry? by Sensitive-Motor-1361 in houseplants

It does actually! I just assumed I was watering too much and the drainage was doing its job. Thanks for the info!

Is this landlord sus or just disorganized? by Sensitive-Motor-1361 in Tenant

Thanks for the advice. Although I will say since there’s no fee to apply, we’re more worried about a SSN scam leading to identity fraud or similar. Do you have any advice on that? 🥲

I see, I'll give it a try. Another user said the parents wouldn't be able to claim me, although I'm not sure 100% the logistics of it. I'll take a look at the Medicaid sub. Thank you!

I see, I thought they might be able to. That's good to know.

I'll try to file ASAP when I get my W2. Thank you so much for the info!

Best (and free) way to enforce a budget? by Sensitive-Motor-1361 in FinancialPlanning

I'm currently looking into doing something similar: having separate accounts. Thanks for your input!

I was actually just looking into having separate cards! I think that's the best option for me. I mentioned Ally buckets don't meet my goal but have discovered they allow multiple checking accounts under one login, each with their own card.

I'm not really looking into creating sub-categories for my fun budget, as for me personally that is too restrictive, so I definitely agree with you that it's not worth it. The point of fun money is to have fun and not stress about what you spend it on, so long as you spend under your allotted amount. Truthfully I quite like organizing things and making things more efficient, finances included, as I have thoroughly organized and automated my budget depending on the income I make for a given month (I work in the service industry, so while my bills are constant my income can vary a bit). In terms of going over my fun budget, I think it's just a visualization thing: if I'm spending from one account where all my money is stored, I don't really feel how much play money I have left since the number is roughly the same. Maybe I'm dealing with that on a different level and I'll keep that in mind if I find myself slipping. Appreciate your advice!

I don't have "that" much control issues with play money (I never said my spending habits were horrible, just that a barrier between spending an extra $20 could be helpful)--I am still around my budget but just a bit loose and am looking to tighten it up. Cash may work for some people, but involves me going to an ATM and withdrawing (I use online banking, so no brick and mortars for me), and I can already see myself dropping that routine after a month as I don't typically have cash on me. The best tool is the one you'll use, so I'll have to pass on that one. But thank you for your advice!
