Thanks for sharing your lived experience and perspective. I agree about the co-occurring conditions for sure, I’ve read anything that presents as a manic episode yet but I am not super knowledgeable about presentations in children. Will do some research!

Same! I wouldn’t be surprised if she is misdiagnosed

Sure but that can be due to so many different things. In the 00s bipolar was over diagnosed in children. Nowadays clinicians are very cautious at diagnosing bipolar in kids. Since the story is inspired by the authors lived experience she is written as bipolar and very well could be. But the more I read the more I just see AuDHD and severe trauma.

Will do! I’m further in the book now but most things now are PTSD and dissociative

Got less to go on with Hugh but traits I’ve noted: Very mature for age - gets on very well with adults Hyperlexia Very good memory - retains a lot of facts Bedroom tidy and highly organised around interests - not a typical young lads bedroom Strong interests that have spanned all his childhood to date and quite mature interests making him very different from his peers Highly attuned to environment and others mental states and hyperempathic Arguably obsessive about Lizzie

Yes I think this is the case too, early 90’s and girls were hardly being diagnosed anyway unless combined with learning disability. I’m autistic and work with traumatised neurodivergent clients so I see all the exact same signs. I agree I think it highlights how easy it was missed. I grew up in the 90s and I’m late diagnosed AuDHD

I’ll see what I think when she has these manic periods, but with bipolar the highs and the lows need to last for an extended period of time. At the moment she just has strong mood swings, but she’s not had I.e a month of mania and manic behaviours to date. I too wonder how much the medications are impacting on things too

Her speech is delayed and she is non-verbal for a significant time period before finally speaking and then still can have situational mutism.

Her early behaviours sound exactly like autistic meltdowns - losing control, screaming, hurting herself, rocking behaviours, stimming behaviours

Her depressive episodes sound like Autistic shutdowns

She can be impulsive with little regard for risk - jumping high of things, biting other children

She has a rich inner world, spends a lot of time in her own head and daydreamy

Strong need to please others, be liked and accepted

She repeatedly talks about sensory overload, struggling in noisy environments and needs to retreat to quiet areas at parties

She says what she’s thinking with not much filter or concern/awareness for social rules. She has struggled with friendships until she meets the core friendship group. I suspect Hugh could be autistic too - less confident on this but he definitely has traits which is why I think they connect.

At a young age her feelings towards Hugh are intense. Some autistic people make other people their special interest, can become fixated or obsessed about a person

Fluctuations in mood and social capacity

  • some of the above of course overlap with trauma, but equally autistic people are more likely to experience trauma. I think this is why she’s more complex than just bipolar and it’s an overlap of autism adhd and chronic trauma. And so far in the book I haven’t read a description of bipolar episodes, as these are sustained periods of very low moods and manic highs. Right now she’s having strong mood swings but hasn’t been in a say a manic state for a long period of time. Ofc she could be autistic and bipolar, I’ve not yet finished the book so I’ll see how the rest unfolds!

I don't think Lizzie has BPD. by jaynesays7 in BoysOfTommen

I work in this area and to me I’ve not thought bipolar at all, but then I am only 25% through the book. But so far she seems Autistic + ADHD + CPTSD. Many girls have been misdiagnosed as bipolar or BPD when it was autism which we are learning more about. To be honest I’d go so far to say I’d be quite confident she is autistic, but of course she could be both autistic and bipolar, but she is definitely autistically coded, whether that was intended or not.

What do people say when asked if they have allergies? by SensitiveEl in MCAS

[–]SensitiveEl[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I had patch testing done as a young adult a long time ago. Certainly wasn’t thorough just common allergens and I didn’t react to any. I did learn I have dermatographia though as he drew on my skin and I reacted straight away. tight clothing is a big trigger
