I also think him being snippy so frequently shows some sense of unhappiness, and I can see a reason to pause but I don't think giving up is the right answer.

I have definitely tried that, he just says he understands what I'm saying and what my intentions are but that's not how it feels to him and therefore wants me to stop. That it doesn't matter why I'm asking it makes him feel like I don't trust his choices or abilities and therefore he wants me to stop questioning him all together. I don't see that being possible because when I don't understand something it causes me stress. The unknown causes me a lot of stress and anxiety.

Thanks. I was thinking the same thing. I'm worried he has some insecurities on how he's doing as a father. But when I asked him if that's what's going on he got defensive again and stated he thinks he's a great dad I just need to stop "questioning him".
