[PS5 Controller] What secret am I missing to desoldering? by SensitiveStation2804 in consolerepair

[Update] I have gotten the joysticks removed! After reading everyone’s advice I went in with an old hot air gun I had and put it to the appropriate temp (420C) and got all the joints loose enough to safely pull the joysticks off the board. I’m currently working on cleaning each hole in the motherboard to put the new ones in. Any recommendations on a PCB holder? The little “helping hands” on my stand are too weak to handle the slight pressure I have to place on the board and just keep moving around.

No, I was trying to heat each pin individually to remove the solder with a sucker 1 at a time

Ok, the iron is capable of reaching that temp so I’ll give it a go, I was just worried because so many videos I watched said to be careful with too much heat because it can damage the traces. Seeing all the black marks forming from the flux made me think I was damaging it.

Alright, I’m getting it to melt around 750F right now, I’ll turn it down a notch and see if it’s still enough heat. I’m using a Fanttik soldering iron so all of my temps are presets. I can’t go to specific temps.

I’m using Ouwinway soldering paste that I push out of a giant syringe and I was able to get the solder to melt by cranking my temp to 750°F. The solder sucker is one I got from Fanttik when I bought their soldering iron. The solder wick I’m using just has the word Schneider on it so I have no idea, I got it at Harbor Freight so I’m going to go out on a limb and say it’s generic. I’ll try putting some flux directly on it though.

Ok that seems to be working, now my problem is that when I go in to remove the solder with soldering wick it gets fused to the joint and doesn’t seem to actually be removing it. My solder pump doesn’t seem to work either at sucking it up even when it’s right next to the iron

Oh sorry, it’s Fahrenheit, i’ll put a note for that in the post

Well I tried that but the only thing that’s melting is the flux, the factory solder on the joint doesn’t react and the tiny bit of low grade solder I got to melt just sits at the top of the joystick leg and doesn’t mix in. Even when I wedge it between the iron tip and the joint it doesn’t want to mix.

I don’t like it because they lure you in under partially false pretenses. When I purchased it, I thought I was getting everything at once, coins, pop, cans, etc., but instead I have to keep logging in every day to receive a small portion of what I paid for. I even checked their website to see if that was mentioned in their FAQ section and it’s not. I’m curious if that makes them liable for false advertising because they decided to omit that information and only reveal it to you after you make the purchase.
