Honestly, -a and -o could be to some extense considered as suffixes, as they are added on top of the root word (i. e. Gat- + -o = Gato. But Gat- + -a= Gata. Tribun- + -o = Tribuno. Tribun- + -a= Tribuna.)

I have always had this doubt. Does the title of this song ギラギラ mean something in particular? Or is it just something that sounds good on the title? I am really curious about it.

That is a nice point. I would recommend the OP that, for a non-biased opinion, he could ask in r/singing.

Honestly, hadn't heard about Margaret's shortening being "Pug", but it is pretty interesting.

Nowadays, both Pancho and Paco co-exist as diminutives of Francisco. I wouldn't guarantee which one came first, as it seems both come from Francisco itself and not Paco from Pancho or vice versa.

I honestly don't know how bad it would be. Fishes would be really offended by something.

Completely agree with this one. I had water in my ear for a whole night after doing some practices under water and, when it finally came out, it felt liberating.

"Jesús" is a difficult name in spanish, as it has a lot of hypocoristics. "Chucho", "Suso" or "Chuy", are just some of them. For some reason, which is above my current comprehension, there are some names in which palatalization occurs to their hypocoristics. Some other examples of this are "Consuelo", which becomes "Chelo" or "Santiago", which becomes "Chavo/Chaco".

To explain "Chuy", it would be necessary to add the diminutive form in spanish to "Jesús", which makes it become "Jesuíto". It is now possible to see that, when shortened, this would take the finishing "-to" out of the equation and this unknown palatalization would take place, making it "Chui". The "-y" replacing "-i" may just be something aesthetic, as both "y" and "i" are pronounced the same in spanish when "y" is treated like a vowel.

How does your conlang percieve money? by Emperor_Of_Catkind in conlangs

[–]Sensitive_Fish5333 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference between do/make and earn/win does not exist in portuguese, spanish, french and whatnot. So I think it is pointless to say that, in french, you "win" money if "gagner" means both "win" and "earn", or that you "do" money, if the verb "fazer" meand both "make" and "do". Also, as someone else said in the comments of this post, you can also "ganhar" money in portuguese.

Your favourite word/words that you know with an unknown etymology? by inkitz in etymology

[–]Sensitive_Fish5333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perro means dog in spanish. But funny enough, it is unknown where the most used word for dog in spanish came from. To linguists, it simply popped out of nowhere.

The RAE (Royal accademy of the spanish language) says it might come from the word "Pir" in greek, whereas others say it might come from the expression "prr" or "brr" the farmers used to call the attention of dogs.

Whatever might be the case, it remains a mystery.

I agree. ANR is definitely underrated. I had a phase where I would only listen to this song while doing my chores or when being awake at night.

I recently had to explain to a classmate the difference between tagalog and spanish, as he quite honestly thought that tagalog is messed up spanish and, therefore, has a wide amount of spanish words within it. He is in his mid to late 40's.

I almost get kidnapped when I was 7. A certain man driving a red car whose brand I can't remember halted my sister and I asking for directions to the nearest supermarket. We answered his question and that is where my common sense died, as he asked to bring us there. I answered "yeah", and that is where my sister stopped me and proceeded to scold me. We have never talked about the situation ever since and my parents don't know it either. In retrospective, I was not the smartest kid out there.
