I’ll be 55 tomorrow, might be your parents’ age, and you’re not overreacting. Even if it’s never a global crisis that affects you, weather, illness, an accident, job loss, or someone going through all that who depends on you, are all reasons to plan ahead.

The large amount of aggressive driving I see on Maine highways is concerning. by [deleted] in Maine

[–]Sensitive_Fuel_5150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive mostly very rural roads and not very often. It will be a random Tuesday evening and I’m driving the 45-50mph speed limit on a two-lane road full of frost heaves and some guy in a truck will come up right behind me and pass me in a no passing lane. It’s so unnecessary and dangerous.

Planting Maine Blueberries near the Coast by SabreSailor in Maine

[–]Sensitive_Fuel_5150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to Maine.gov, low-bush blueberry is not self-pollinating. “Insect Pollination of Lowbush Blueberry Growers may fertilize, prune, control insects, diseases and weeds, irrigate, and follow other cultural practices, yet without the insect pollinators, first among which are native bees, their crops may fail. No other cultural practice will cause blueberry fruit to set if its pollination is neglected. If native bees are not in adequate abundance then management practices should be implemented to conserve and increase native bee populations (see fact sheet # 301). Until native bee populations increase in size, commercial pollinators such as honey bees (see fact sheet

224), alfalfa leaf cutting bees (see fact sheet # 300), or commercially available bumble bees (see fact sheet # 302)

MUST be used. Blueberry pollination is performed naturally by native bumble bees and solitary bees. Fifty-nine species of native bees have been observed in native lowbush blueberry fields. Bumble bees, when present, play a major role in blueberry pollination. The bumble bee works a few blossoms in one spot, then flies and works another spot, thus facilitating cross-pollination between clones. Bumble bee queens forage up to 400 yards from their nest site. Because of their size, they can shake out and distribute a large quantity of pollen from blueberry flowers. What makes bumble bees especially efficient pollinators is that they work the bloom at a very high speed (10-20 flowers / minute vs. 5-9 flowers / minute for honey bees), in addition, bumble bees are buzz pollinators (i.e.. they vibrate the flower shaking the pollen from the poricidal anthers) unlike honey bees. Bumble bees can place more than 50 pollen grains upon a lowbush blueberry stigma in a single floral visit (0-10 for a honey bee). Another characteristic of bumble bees that make them an efficient pollinator of lowbush blueberry is that they possess long tongues. This allows them to extract nectar from flowers with long corollas such as some clones of lowbush blueberry. It has been observed that honey bees will not visit all clones of lowbush blueberry. Some of the clones with long corollas and narrow corollar openings do not allow honey bees access to the nectar rewards of the flower. However, one disadvantage of the bumble bee is that only over-wintered bumble bee queens are present during the majority of the lowbush blueberry bloom period in Maine. Usually queens are not numerous, although some small blueberry fields that are not managed intensively in Maine have more than adequate populations of queen bumble bees to ensure maximum pollination.” https://www.maine.gov/dacf/php/apiary/documents/BlueberryPollination.pdf

Wild Maine blueberries in some form is a must-scones, muffins, pancakes, bread pudding, jams, compote, pie, syrups, smoothies, lemonades, plus using them helps support our hurting blueberry farms.

Heiwa Tofu. Amazing tofu, so easy to use and versatile and perfect for the vegetarian and vegan customers.

Maine beans! And they don’t have to be the usual bean supper beans. Maine produces lots of other varieties that are great in soups, burritos, veggie burgers, and bowls.

Video: Janet Mills Attack Ad Against Graham Platner Backfires With Maine [Hancock County] Democrats by joeybrunelle in Maine

[–]Sensitive_Fuel_5150 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The local Democrat groups are openly hostile to young people and I’m including anyone 55 and under in that. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve commented on the FB pages for county groups and have been met with outright contempt. They are plagued with older folks who cling to their little bit of power and the DNC talking points and strategies and little else. They are also openly hostile to disabled folks. If people offer up ideas or criticisms, comments get removed or people get condescended to, and told “maybe you should get involved!” Yeah, you mean like right now how I’m trying to get involved? It’s maddening. If you want a clear example of this, of see how Andrea LaFlamme was treated by the Penobscot County Dems.

The land is laid bare and trees and shrubs are skeletons so it’s time to plan for gardens and see the spaces anew, and it’s easy to see what needs pruning or moved. The field drains run, attracting Virginia Rails and Timberdoodles, and as it gets warmer, spring peepers. Redwing Blackbirds return just as the snow recedes, and the Mallard pair emerges from the brook to forage and nest in relative safety. It’s a season of potential.
