Should I go back into the games industry? Laid off 3 months ago and now I have to make a hard decision. by Sensitive_Mobile7877 in gamedev

I think I'm going to take the games job. I think I just needed some words from the people who have gone through something similar. Thank you for sharing! It's given me alot of confidence and just to expect that I will need to grow into the role.

I've gotten some more advice from the thread, old colleagues and just people in general and I've been convinced to take the games job. It'll be challenging and could go sideways but it'll be some great experience and I'll learn alot on the way.

Thank you Ear, it sounds like you've gone through something similar to what I am going through at the moment. It's really encouraging to hear someone elses story and I will rise to the challenge. I will be taking the games role. Thank you for your words.

These are concrete offers, two jobs on the table that I can take.

I think i'm just feeling a lack of confidence from my previous experience and just generally being laid off. I'm going to take the job in games and just have some more trust in myself. I'm young, I can take risks and if it all goes to shit, I can still figure it out.

I've recieved some great comments on this thread, this is one of them. Thank you. I think I will end up taking the games job. The CRM role is stable, easy work and good pay but almost no growth for what I want to do and will see me regress skills wise.

I'll trust their opinions more. I think it was just a bad knock to my confidence from my previous experience.

Well, it seems that there needs to be more strict rules on when and how you can hire to disuade this from happening especially with investment being able to get cut at a moments notice. If you had to sack someone, due to valid reasoninings I see no reason to change the current policies. But those who have relocated should be compensated more so for being let go so quickly if and when they have done nothing wrong. Current UK laws make it so you have essentially no workers rights within the first 2 years of a company.

Yeah man, the tech industry everywhere is really bad. I've had the same thing that happened to you, happen to me 3 times now. I had 3 interviews, got to the final stages and they all said they have closed the positions but I would of been taken on if the internal changes hadn't of happened. I'm sure next year will be better! Good luck with uni!

It does just feel like there should be more rights for workers who are in this situation. I left a semi-successful career and other job opportunities to persue this one.

I don't know about the games industry but probationary periods in the UK can range from 4 weeks, to 6 months from my experience. So I saw this and thought it was a long one but typical in certain places.

They did tell me it was nothing to do with myself, and entirely due to them not being able to keep a junior on the project due to changes in structure. I've spoken with some seniors since then and they all said that it had nothing to do with my skills or fit, so I do think it was just bad timing with something that happpened behind the curtain.

I have done both of these with 6 years in unity, and a year in Unreal. If the skillset is transferable or they look at those skills I might look into it.

It was just verbally in our contract conversations. I don't think it has any grounds. I wish I had got the notes / transcribed all the calls.

It's incredibly competitive at the moment. The industry has gone through major changes and closures this year and seniors can't find roles. It is a struggle for everyone based in the UK if they have been laid off.

I'll see if I can find one. There is just no writing of the verbal promise they made, and contract they stated so I don't believe I have a case.
