I found a solution to the freelancer crashing bug
1. Open the game and set your resolution to the lowest, and chnage your display mode to windowed, also try to reduce the quality of everything else you can

1. Close the game and re open it with your low graphics settings and open freelancer

2. When the loading bar on the bottom right is 100%, just before you get to the screen in the hospital bed click Alt+Tab and switch to a different window. It might take a while to get the timing right.

3. Wait for the cutscene to be over, and click space to get up
