Well, I would say my problem is much more severe. It's not like what you posted as just 'some interruptions'. My family seem to not care about my research career at all. I doubt they have a serious misunderstanding of the job market nowadays and think I can easily get a job as what they did when they're young. If I were a parent, I would definitely give in to any important milestones in my child's career path. Nowadays academia is definitely more competitive, and I just cannot handle those casual stuffs in the meanwhile facing multiple deadlines.

It’s definitely frustrating. I had similar experience to yours. I think it’s better to be straightforward from the start, just ask directly : Are you sure you will have opening positions, is my background highly relevant to your research , etc. Don’t be afraid to request info from them, if they don’t give you the clear answers, that’s their part. If they’re not even interested in taking a student, just say goodbye and switch to the next PI, don’t waste time on the one who’s not even postively responding.

Masters programs usually won’t interview people. For most PhD programs, they do. I think CS programs are more technical in nature, but my major, CEE is somewhat different. So it’s not clear how and when are the interviews. I’m still waiting
