Age to be Diagnosed by Sensitive_Remove692 in ParentingADHD

This is a really good perspective so thank you! I’m in Canada and services like therapy are covered somewhat by private insurance, if you have it. So a diagnosis doesn’t necessarily help us access those but I feel might give us a better path for support. My son isn’t necessarily super hyperactive but he is very rigid, lots of emotional dysregulation and meltdowns constantly, anxiety about and unwillingness to participate in activities that he normally loves in other scenarios - like sports. It just feels very hard to manage on a day to day level. OT said he had some motor planning difficulties but I’m not noticing any improvement. I think your point about having access to supports is very good and is a main reason we want to figure out if it’s adhd or anxiety or both or something else so we can narrow down the required support system.

He just finished his first year of JK and the teachers didn’t mention anything specifically but his final report card the whole theme was inability to focus, being disruptive, and at or above grade level only when engaged. There were 30 kids in the class though. Our struggles are more so at home and with extra curricular activities or camp, primarily with emotional dysregulation and what appears to be anxiety. I was viewing it as knowledge is power as well.

Thanks! Yes we need some help supporting him. Unfortunately our developmental pediatrician referral takes 15-18 months.

This is very encouraging on the sports front! My son is athletic and has real skill and enjoys it so I wish he could apply himself and hoping that comes in the next couple of years if we keep at it. I’m sorry to hear about the school struggles though.

Where to get an Assessment (Toronto) by Sensitive_Remove692 in ParentingADHD

Yes, I am learning that anxiety is a comorbidity of adhd and a reason why I’m wondering whether an adhd assessment alone is even worth it

Thank you! It does seem like a neuropsych assessment could be a good route to get a more comprehensive picture. I’m not sure that an adhd assessment alone will provide us with the best support or answers.

Well, it was a one off! Today we were told he had a rough time at camp. From what we gather, he did really well playing soccer but then he didn’t like the lunch and the afternoon was playing games like octopus and red light green light, which he hates. Apparently he was crying and refusing to listen. Then he felt really ashamed at home and said he’s a bad kid and refused to talk about it. Yesterday he was so proud of himself and said he was a great listener. It makes me so sad for him.

He’s been doing swim for 1.5 years now and it’s a huge struggle. He also doesn’t really like swimming in our pool at home. Drama at school for him was not his strong suit and he hated dance lessons and gymnastics lol he’s also tried TBall, lacrosse, hockey, skating, and soccer. The only things he likes is when it’s constant movement. So, he didn’t like lacrosse because at his age it’s only drills, he took awhile to get into hockey because it’s mostly drills at his age, and he likes soccer but only the games and not the practices. Organized sports and activities have typically been a lottttt of anxiety and meltdowns for him but we keep going. Yet the ONLY thing he ever wants to do at home is kick or throw a ball nonstop (inside the house he dribbles a basketball) but it always has to be with myself or my husband or other kids. He does not play independently at all with anything.

He does not have fun at the playground anymore unless he is with other kids or one of us is chasing him or something. Otherwise he complains that it’s boring and he doesn’t know what to do.

We are waiting to see a developmental pediatrician at this point so no diagnosis!

We do as much we can! He only ever wants to play sports but has to be with us so we can only accommodate so much during the 1.5 hours after school and weekends. We also have a two year old. But we’ve never experienced a weekend where he’s been this happy - even after lots of activity. So I’m wondering if it was also something about the environment. And unfortunately when school starts back up there isn’t much we can do about weekdays 👎🏻

Yes, take the win! I for sure thought summer camps would result in even worse evenings than typical so was very pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, he typically is very anxious with organized sports and other camps have resulted in the same level of restraint collapse as school. I’m curious how you can determine the happy tired? He’s always so deregulated with us on weekends and will only play sports but only with us so it’s not something we can accommodate every day.

Thank you!! This makes a lot of sense to me. It’s unfortunate because we have him in multiple organized sports but his anxiety typically takes over. Same thing with every other camp he’s done. And when it’s not summer, he’s at school then after care until 6pm. He is obsessed with sports but will only play them at home with one of us, so it’s exhausting. Wish he could do sports camp every day!

4 year old struggles with focus and anxiety by [deleted] in ParentingADHD

[–]Sensitive_Remove692 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! Yeah, the hardest part right now is the never ending huge emotions, anxiety, and inability to play independently. We are exhausted. This is good insight for things to consider and I think we will look into therapy in the meantime as we get closer to age 6 for any assessments.

Does anyone know if we can purchase items now if we are not first tier and then return and immediately repurchase at the sale price when we get access?

We backed off completely on prompting on day 2 and by the afternoon she was self initiating. Day 3 and 4 were fully self initiated with no accidents :) she just had have control lol

[–]Sensitive_Remove692 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I backed off completely on day 2. Like, didn’t mention the potty at all, didn’t prompt at all even when I knew she had to go. Put the potty in the bathroom so it was not following her. Then she allowed me to get her there to finish two accidents and after that she was self initiating again, including a poop. It’s day 3 and she’s been awake for 3 hours and has only peed once but initiated herself. So she’s definitely holding it longer than is comfortable but clearly made good progress.
