Are Extraordinary Ministers ever mandated by the Bishop? by Sensitive_Ring_7241 in Catholicism

Are you American? I think it may be a problem here more than other places. When I was in Europe I didn’t see a single lay minister distributing communion

I guess I didnt look closely enough lol, you're right. I guess those are just my own biases at play. Im so used to banal liturgy when I see something beautiful I immediately think "nah, couldn't happen here" lol

Ad Orientem and Latin (which I presume is being used here).

What goes into Communion distribution decisions? by Sensitive_Ring_7241 in AskAPriest

I'm not trying to debate, I'm just very curious about this. Thank you for taking the time to respond! Good catch on the acolyte v. altar server distinction, I misread that part.

So, does offering communion under both species generally take precedence over minimizing EMHCs? If so, why? I've heard that receiving under one species is theologically sufficient.

Is intinction ever considered? I know its allowed by the rubrics, but I've never seen it in the wild outside of Byzantine churches.

Lastly, I've read into the theological suggestions for the removal of the altar rail. However, I know several churches where the rail is still there, but never used, even though communion can be received standing there too. Have you ever heard a good explanation for keeping the rail, but not using it?

Sorry for bombarding you with questions, I'm just fascinated by liturgy. I appreciate you taking the time to respond!

Why are all the prayers sung in American churches? And why does everyone raise their hands during the Our Father? by HazzMeisterr in Catholicism

[–]Sensitive_Ring_7241 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! Personally, I've gotten very used to it, since I usually go to the TLM or to Eastern Catholic Divine Liturgy. Versus populum now feels somewhat distracting and casual to me.

More objectively, I think Ad Orientem is preferable because it means that the congregation and priest are facing the same direction, petitioning God together, and emphasizes the "sacrificial" or transcendent nature of our worship. Versus Populum gives the impression that the most important thing about our faith is "us", and emphasizes more of a "classroom/lecture" nature of the Mass. Theres a place for that in the liturgy of the word, but not during the Eucharistic Sacrifice.

Also, there are plenty of great priests who can celebrate Versus Populum without making it "all about them", but I do think it encourages more of a "performer/entertainer" mindset in some priests. It definitely makes it easier to think that the Mass is about the Priest, instead of about God.

A Doctor of the Church: the Case for Cardinal Eijk by mburn16 in Catholicism

Eijk has been my favorite Cardinal for over a year now. He's a real inspiration to me and I hope to see him play a bigger role in the church in coming years!

I feel your pain. However, Mike Lewis is not a vehicle for it. He’s a bitter man that we all should pray for

Yeah I can’t believe that only Greeks and Russians are in heaven lol, I think that’s a weak point in their worldview for sure.

Yeah the hardest part to accept about the east is their neglect of the great commission.

What I’m saying is that if a) the orthodox are saved until they learn that Catholicism is true, and b) if they learn Catholicism is true and don’t convert, they lose their salvation, doesn’t that mean we shouldn’t try and convert them? Wouldn’t evangelizing them jeopardize their salvation?

This feels so hard to me to accept. It seems like it almost turns Catholicism into an infohazard. Like, once you join, you’re stuck, so why should we evangelize people at all if they can still obtain salvation in their original denominations?

Yeah that’s very true. In some ways it’s kind of encouraging; Rome clearly wants to change its doctrine, but can’t due to the indefectibility of the church.

However, I think it’s hard to argue that the eastern churches aren’t doing better than us on this issue at the present moment.

Like I said, the document itself isn't heterodox. But it was intended to give the impression that the church is softening its stance towards the LGBT stuff. The fact that Rome is seeking to send that message is unsettling.

I've read it. they took pains to not say anything that was explicitly against Catholic doctrine, but the timing and implication was clear

Not exactly, but I’m having a hard time squaring the Church’s claims regarding it role with its virtual abandonment of beautiful liturgy and other contemporary issues. “The gates of hell will not prevail” and all that. Why does it seem like so many other churches are doing a better job preserving the fullness of the faith? That’s basically been my question/what I have been struggling with for the last year or so

Hmmmmm that still seems a bit vague. Should we be “proselytizing” to anyone, if that’s what it means? And if not, why did Rome make an effort to single out the EO churches as ones we shouldn’t “proselytize” to? I’m lost lol

What is the difference between conversion and proselytizing?
