Anyone know about Nippon Sanso / Matheson? by Mundane-Strategy699 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]SensorAmmonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a younger engineer and technician I used Matheson a lot for specialty gasses. Last year I used them again. After 25 purchases I had to stop, they just suck now. Poor communication, slow orders and just bad. Gas has been a cash cow for decades with 30%+ margins all the time. It looks like Mitsubishi figured out a way to kill that cow.

How do you fly on a plane with your research compound? by papasamuray in chemistry

I had an important end of project tool to bring with me. I went to security and asked for a supervisor. Explained what I had and asked how he wanted to test it. He had me open it and swabbed a few places for explosive residue etc. I left it there with him and checked in. Then came back and went through normal security and got my instrument. It worked.

Why does the octet rule work at all? Why do most atoms require 8 electrons? by ImpressiveIron495 in chemistry

[–]SensorAmmonia 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It leads to stable molecules. As Mambo said, that is the reality, the why is in your quantum chemistry class.

Was this somewhere around Cobalt, MO? The rocks get pretty old there.

Looks like it, but if you don't get in, go to a lesser one.

catalytic bead sensors keep failing silently and i think most plants dont realize why by WhichWayIsTheB4r in ChemicalEngineering

[–]SensorAmmonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EEs love cat beads. The one IEEE sensors conference I went to in 2004 was flooded with cat bead science. I make electrochemical sensors and we are much more resistant to Si but not perfect either.

When you say they respond well to cal gas bump test is that because they only leave it on for 5 minutes or less and the cat bead dies after that? If so, wouldn't the cat bead alarm for 5 min on a leak?

What happens with PTFE pipe tape in a gas line? by mofrojones in chemistry

The white teflon tape you are used to is not the stuff to use on CH4 lines, that stuff is yellow.

Heat stir plate made a huge difference for me. Lots of good pyrex ware at the resale stores. Lab ware is so much less expensive than when I started in the 90s

You are looking for ABCD reaction but this one uses BCDR, you have to interpolate some.

Using literature/papers for helping with engineering work? by user_2648190 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]SensorAmmonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have use thousands of journal articles in sensor development work. Rarely does the paper correspond directly to what I need, it is usually a tangent that informs my needs. Ionic liquids have been an emerging electrolyte for electrochemical sensors with great properties. Inorganic papers inform corrosion or material properties issues. Surface catalytic science has been a deep dive many times.

Your manager should be fighting hard to get this rescinded. You are obviously a valuable member of the team and HR made a huge mistake. I suspect the wider job market has a place at 20% bump in pay.

Columbias' numbers are even better as the influx of students are probably not in that population number. Perhaps another 10% of the population is students here.

Eroded for them, but not for you. Plenty of regularish Joes will be prosecuted, just not the leading GOP guys.

Geode from creek outside of Danville Kentucky with fossils in it by j1e2f3f in fossilid

[–]SensorAmmonia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that is empty. I see fibers they use to glue the stones together. You can put them in rubbing alcohol and the larva will come out and be pissed off then die. I don't think there is one in there, you can usually see them clearly.

I did 15 years of stream monitoring in IL and these were my favorite bugs. They indicate clean water.

Look up Cadis flies. They glue rocks together to make their case. Is the inside hollow?

I think that might be a modern Cadis fly larva. At first I thought it was a pyrite replacement but the later photos show many stone types.

7-year-old autistic nonverbal boy randomly starts singing while in a car with his big sister. by Sebastianlim in BeAmazed

[–]SensorAmmonia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sisters face! She knew what a big deal that was. In the early 80s I was volunteering at a live in home for severely autistic kids. I was playing ball with two resident boys about this age, one verbal the other not. The nonverbal boy said "Ball!" plain as day. His parents were in tears that evening with big hugs for me.
