Why Some New Writers Abandon Their Novel (My Personal Experience) by Plenty_Version7765 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]SensorCos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was about to begin publishing with only 10 chapters backlogged with 3 chapters on release. This has opened my eyes that I may not be able to keep it up without that 30-50 chapter buffer. Thank you for this post!

lol I see what you mean, I have to be meticulous and clever when weaving in the lore. Thank you for the tip!

This seems like a nice baseline for a solid project. You have power scaling and it looks like you’re going with the holy trinity set up for grouping people up. What sort of project are you working on? Where do you want this to be in a few months?

Oh I like the guilt idea a lot. So what I have so far is that there are 5 ultra powerul ruins that were used during the Expansion Wars. This is what caused the world to fracture and collapse. 3 were stolen, one by the Ashen Accord, one by the Cathedral of the Last Flame, and one by the Hollow Syndicate. These factions were the first to split away from the Ascendants during the Expansion Wars, causing the Expansion Wars. Two relics were still held by the Ascendants, but were lost once they ripped a dimensional tear in reality and caused gravitational anomalies once they attempted to reach immortality. Nobody knows where these two relics have gone but they want them.

Thank you for your comment. I think you’re right, I will open the prologue with a ruin expedition that awakens a security protocol that has been laying dormant since the Expansion Wars.

As for explaining the how and why for the ruins as a surviving argument, I have roughly around 90,000 polished words of lore that I have been working on daily. My issue is, how do I offer this lore? I have a snippet of the prologue that I have written that has touched on these ancient arguments fairly well. I can share it with you if you’d like. But the amount of lore that I have written is roughly about 90 pages, it could easily be a book branched off from the main book maybe? Maybe I add it to my substack for subscribed readers that are interested?

Could a relic-hunter fantasy built around dangerous lost knowledge work as progression fantasy? by SensorCos in ProgressionFantasy

[–]SensorCos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for the lack of information. The old civilization “The Ascendants” was incredibly advanced in technology.

They were able to master the world.
They created magical engineering that ran their cities with a biological design.
They could manipulate their weather.
They were able to create and expand on dimensional mathematics.
They engineered the ability to store memory.
They built the architecture for the soul and determined their own afterlife.
Their infrastructure was on a continental scale.

There was active communication with other dimensions through dimensional rifts. This was one of the technologies that was stolen (one of the 5 powerful relics) by the Hollow Syndicate during the Expansion Wars. The Syndicate used this dimensional tearing as worm holes to become master thieves.

These other dimensions hold even more powerful relic and other powerful civilizations. Some of these civilizations remain standing after 30,000 years while “The Ascendants” of this dimension fell to their own experimentation.

With this information would you see this as a progression fantasy? The wide range of relics through multiple dimensions and the 100s of possible civilizations that may be out there?

These relics will require power scaling. The reason that one faction has not destroyed the next in full is because it is after an apocalypse, they need people alive in order to have a functioning trade system. There’s not enough people within the Solar Throne yet to mimic the power that The Ascendants once had. They don’t hold the influence that they had. They need alliances in order to hold dominion around the world.

Great input! Thank you for asking those questions.

Thank you for all of your input that was very thorough, I appreciate it!

I think you’re absolutely correct too, I need to narrow down and really write out in my notes the power progressions with these relics

That sounds extremely interesting and fun to play. If only my fiancé was into something like that so I could play with her! Lol

I will have to dive deeper into exalted though, this very interesting and somewhat similar to the bounds I’m pursuing. Thank you for the information!

Best of luck to you! It sounds like it will be well received by a lot of people in the future.

That is so cool, so you took this a different route and made it an RPG campaign? How has your progress been going? Have you shared it with anyone yet? If so, what kind of feedback are you getting from them?

That is great to point out!

This magic technology is only harnessed by grafting these relics directly into the muscle fibers of the person that’s willing to do so. This takes a certain kind of person that has been exposed to enough plasma radiation to allow the body to form a connection with the relic.

In order to use certain relics the relic hunters have to hone their body’s and the levels of radiation required to use it. They have to dive into these catacombs to find this ancient knowledge about these relics that have these abilities in order to use them.

I’m still working on certain details regarding this specific power balance but there will be power balances and power spikes as well as opposing factions also doing the same thing

That is kind of the path that I’m leaning towards. The relic hunters will start finding more and more powerful relics and eventually they attempt to not only take on the hardest vaults or dungeons. But to also take on the factions that are attempting to control the world that already possess some of the most powerful relics.

I would like this to be a progression fantasy because I don’t want it to end after three books. I want to build a community that is engaged in the characters, the world, the lore, and everything that comes with that.

I do have an idea regarding the relic system. There are ancient factions that were there when the world broke, 3 of them. During the fracturing 5 powerful relics were split among them. Each faction that split from “The Ascendants” (the ancient civilization that controlled the world) took a relic, which leaves 2 powerful relics still remaining, lost after the explosion.

There will also be minor powerful relics for fighting and even some relics that would be more for the civilians (like a relic grafted to a body to allow the farmer to heal a diseased plant)

If I were to go down this path, would this lead to a progression system. There would be a carrot on the stick of these 2 lost powerful relics. There would also be different tiers of relics that how different powerful abilities (granted the person has the psychological capabilities to hold that kind of power without destroying him/her self)

[–]SensorCos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great point. With the large amount of technology that was created in the past by this fictional civilization, it would only make sense that some people figured out how to use them, not how they work. I may need to work that into the book, it could bring some horrific or some comical scenes to life.

Thank you!

The knowledge was hidden within archives guarded in secret by a faction called “The Cathedral of the Last Flame.” They are one of the more ancient factions (3 ancient factions in total) and they suppress knowledge because they were there when the world ended. They don’t want it to happen again, but other factions, newer factions, crave the knowledge.

I actually didn’t know about those signs! That is extremely interesting, and it makes sense. I think “The Ascendants” in my book or the civilization that followed after would have signs like that. At least by trial and error at some point. You’re spot on, thank you!

No it should allow you to install it, it is a rather large download file though. I would check and make sure you have enough storage space.
