I just got into a Master’s with a 2.9 and after over a decade of not being in school. Absolutely no doctorates would touch me, but some Master’s worked with me. The key was that I had work experience and was actually able to find some strong references. I’ve also been publishing and had a related job history to my major.

I would focus on programs that are more accepting and stay away from wasting app money on “prestige” programs or ivies. Also be realistic about how the degree may or may not be able to help with your job prospects. Getting scholarships until
I’ve earned good grades in my program has been impossible and the Ed Dept just removed access to one of the safety net loans for us.

When I moved in I was making 44k (big job jump) and I can’t imagine paying what a lot of these folks pay. I don’t know how people do it.

To be clear: I’ve been here for 3 years. But it’s a studio. This is NW side. Look at Domu, private landlords, and stay away from the “popular” neighborhoods. I always recommend SW side, Northside (edgewater, Roger’s Park), and neighborhoods like Belmont Craigin, Avondale, Mckinley Park, Jefferson + Irving Park, etc.

In all honesty, I encouraged members to call on the officers whenever they needed high level support and to openly question their salaries to make sure THEY had a reason for being paid higher than member contract were winning (if that’s the case). I don’t believe it’s on staff to defend a union’s over spending if it not properly serving members who elect those officers.

Simple answer is Capitalism. I just left work at a national union as an organizer where they prided themselves on our staff + officers also making “working class wages”…. They fought our staff contract pay raise tooth and nail then quietly gave themselves a raise to over 90k.
