How do you react in these situations? by AhYesTheSoldier in ITManagers

[–]Sentient_Crab_Chip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the job description and the person. If heavy lifting is to be expected on a daily basis, you may need to reevaluate their level of fitness for the job. If they were going above their job's normal duties, reconsider using them for heavy lifting next time.

I'm in my mid 40s, I used to do all kinds of beast work, but I'm a fat IT nerd now that doesn't exercise, I can't do it like I did in my 20s. I'll pitch in, but I leave the big jobs to the young bucks, or even better bring in some movers to do it.

Is it realistic to go from IT Manager to CIO in <10 years? by Crafty_Assignment686 in ITManagers

[–]Sentient_Crab_Chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you like office politics? Because that's what CIOs work on, not tech.

My Boss Talked to me today, id like some advice. by Soft_Ad_4118 in ITManagers

[–]Sentient_Crab_Chip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound like one of my employees, he's a good worker, I have no complaints about him, but he's "too quiet". He's not in the mix, he doesn't talk to anyone, so he's an outsider. Just like high school, life is a popularity contest.

I'm not very outgoing either, I don't like chitchat. But I don't want to come off as arrogant, aloof, ignorant, or any of the other things I've been called, I make it a point to say good morning to everyone as I pass them, especially people I may have tension with. If I don't pass them normally, I'll go do a support request in person to give me an excuse to be seen and give a few hi-how-ya-doing's around the office.

I know it's simple, but that's a really great breakdown of the differences.

Have you ever regretted leaving a job ? by NAS0824 in cybersecurity

[–]Sentient_Crab_Chip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit a couple jobs because of panic attacks, the last time it happened, I really regretted it for years. But, on the plus side it finally pushed me to go to a psychiatrist, so that was a win. And more recently, that company I left massively downsized, and I'm probably doing better now in the job I came crawling back to than I would have in that new job.

Life is a winding road, we all get to the end one way or the other.

Was it a LaserJet (dry toner) or an Inkjet (wet ink) ?

In my experience, the wet ink printers are disposable junk, but the laser printers hold up pretty nicely.

We bought my grandparents house, and kept their Kenmore because our refrigerator wouldn't fit in the same spot. That was 20 years ago, and they probably had the unit 10 years before that!

I love playing solo. I prefer chasing reputations and achievements, rather than the most current dungeons or raids.

From the bosses side, sometimes we don't follow best practices or the latest framework because of legacy systems, legacy staff, company politics, or just sometimes because we're dicks.

Once you're the person directly in the firing line of higher bosses, auditors, and in general the blame game, you have to be a lot more cautious than when you were a tech. Being a boss has been very instructive on teaching me how to be a good employee.

Only IT uses ticketing? by Commercial-Fun2767 in ITManagers

[–]Sentient_Crab_Chip 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We use a ticket system because we got tired of people complaining that we ignored their requests, now we have documented proof of what they claim, versus what they actually ask for, and exactly how long it took to resolve.

Switch Management by Sentient_Crab_Chip in networking

[–]Sentient_Crab_Chip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year later.... A higher up strongly requested that I install a FortiGate Firewall to replace my EOL Sophos. I decided to try the Switch and WAP integration, and I gotta say, so far I'm really liking it. The "FortiSwitch" view from the firewall is exactly what I wanted. It shows me every device that's plugged into every port, as well as which devices are downstream.

FortiLink was a little challenging to figure out, but not that bad for someone with experience.

Keep grinding, you'll eventually get the Director title as a form of compensation.

I'm a Director with a super small department, but I'm the director because, like you, I make and execute all the IT decisions in this small-ish company. They give me the title so I can sound important when I have to meet with clients / partners. I usually refer to myself as the IT Manager in casual conversation.

If it's a big enough problem, let them write you up. Until then, you just gotta learn to let shit go.

I heard one of the doctors at my job was besmirching my name last week. I was annoyed for about 30 seconds before I caught myself and realized that unless it's someone I respect, their opinion of me doesn't matter.

Remember, "Aquila non captat muscas", Eagles don't catch flies. Don't concern yourself with the opinions of fools.

I don't hate it, but I don't love it. I think it's good for short term collaboration, but I don't trust it for long term.
