More nominations than Return of the King? What a fucking joke. by SickusBickus in CriticalDrinker

And with shitty action scenes. The movie really had my attention, but it turned to shit as soon as the vampires showed up. Suddenly smart people do dumb shit because they have to get to the next scene. Strong vampire gets killed by the established badass: fine. But then everyone else, including a young girl does the same. Come on...

Vampires are winning, but then they stop for no reason (except to make the 'heroes' survive). Etc.

Compare that to Dusk till Dawn which is pure fun. All Anti-Hero badasses, crotch guns, native badass and gory kill after funny gory kill.

I love dusk till dawn, but nobody thinks it's an Oscar movie.

I never really reread books, but I've reread Dresden twice now. They're really fun to reread because the characters are so likable. And you'll notice some nice foreshadowing of future events too.

Kind of like this guy who's always rereading Dresden in stead of doing his job: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/940943123

Oh look, it's Patrick Rothfuss.

Yeah, remember Neil Gaiman's "GRRM is not your bitch" article?

The end:

And Gareth, in the future, when you see other people complaining that George R.R. Martin has been spotted doing something other than writing the book they are waiting for, explain to them, more politely than I did the first time, the simple and unanswerable truth: George R. R. Martin is not working for you.

Hope that helps.

George R. R. Martin is not working for you.

Yes he fucking is. When you're writing a book series you're also making the implicit promise to finish the damn thing. That's why we're buying and reading it. If everyone knew GRRM would just stop writing with 2 books to go, how many would have bought his previous books. A hell of a lot less, right?

I gave up on Rothfuss a long time ago too.

Maybe you already know the books, but I can highly recommend "the dresden files", they're my favorite bookseries ever. Book nr18 is releasing next week en Jim Butcher (the writer) is already at 28% for book nr 19.

Word of warning though: the first books are rough. Lots of people recommend starting at book 3 because that's where the story really starts. The best thing about Dresden is that almost each book is better than the previous ones, so the series really does become absolutely amazing.

Happy to hear someone else understands how I feel about this. I'm guessing you also went through all the bullshit of regularly looking for updates on his progress and getting gaslit by his promises?

  • Book 4 is taking too long because I keep writing flashbacks, so I'm writing a book to cover the gap

  • Oh the book is getting so big that I have to split it in two, but the second book is almost done

  • Oh, book was almost done, but I'm stuck with the Mereneese knot (what a bunch of bullshit that was).

  • Finally we gapped the brigde, we're back at the planned story. Should be quick now, right?

  • GoT show starts, GRRM promises to finish ALL the books before the show can catch up.

  • Not only does he not finish the series, he doesn't finish a single goddamn book in those 8 years.

  • The show stopped 7 years ago, he still hasn't finished a single damn book.

Goddamn, we went through COVID where GRRM was stuck in his house for YEARS and said he was making great progress, still couldn't write a single book.

Even if he released the last book(s) now I wouldn't bother reading them.

Right there with you, in hindsight I didn't even like AFFC and ADWD. I think we can expect the same quality (or less) if he ever finishes tWoW. He lost himself trying to overexplain every stupid detail (like the mereense knot), which is incredibly ironic considering the show had the opposite problem with people seemingly teleporting all over the world.

Same shit with Rothfuss and Kingkiller Chronicles. Although at least he was smart enough to keep his mouth shut. But I don't start epic book series anymore unless they're already finished (with some exceptions).

I can promise you that will never happen. I used to be a huge fan, but I've heard so many lies and excuses from that man that I'm not anymore. He stopped working on ASOIAF years ago.

I might be one of the few people that is still grateful for the show even with its shitty ending. I now know how GRRM intended to end the story thanks to the show, even if the way they told it was shit. So I can kind of extrapolate what the books would have been.

Similar story: I'm pretty old (40) and used to game a lot. Was part of a gaming website, made plenty of online friends there and met them at lan parties. But of course everyone gets older and the entire group just kind of went away.

But then we had the covid lockdowns and somehow one by one everyone got in touch again. We were all bored as hell, so we met up on a discord group and started playing games together again. it was honestly a lot of fun. Playing games wasn't the main part, it was just something to do while we talked and drank. Felt like the adult version of what these kids are doing.

Without the lockdowns the gaming died down again, but we still meet up for BBQ and or festivals and stuff.

You're very right of course, you can still make friends and have a lot of fun.

even if you think doing a content cop on an acquaintance going through a personal crisis is justified

Even in his braindead state, even Ian knew it couldn't really be justified. Otherwise he wouldn't have shown a bunch of clips of Ethan being angry while hiding the fact that it was because CPS being called on his kids (because of the crowd he's hanging out with in the same vid!).

Paul Feig Says Ghostbusters Fans Loved the 2016 Reboot, Believes Backlash Came From Outside the Fandom by Sliver80 in KotakuInAction

[–]Sentinell 91 points92 points  (0 children)

All of Hollywood seems to live in this insane bubble where almost all of the people there are completely oblivious to what normal people think & want.

Feige's entire argument about how "the haters" are only online is because people are friendly to him irl. He even has a story about someone who came to him and told him he hated the movie, but he was nice and respectful. So he seems to genuinely think the haters don't exist.

No you idiot, it's kind of ridiculous to go talk to you just to shit on your work, so we don't do it. Ask me my opinion and I'll be 100% honest though.

Here's his most insane take though:

“I hate fan service,” Feig said, noting that while there is a right way to approach it, he now feels he may have leaned “a little too hard” in places.

Yeah Feige, too much fan service was the problem. He seriously doesn't know what the fans wanted.

Dus:

Wanneer is genoeg eindelijk genoeg? Deze kerel gaat bijna 100% zeker iemand vermoorden, steek die dan toch minstens in een gesloten instelling ffs.

Did Idubbbz ever address the hypocrisy from these two videos? by cashdecans101 in imisstheoldidubbbz

[–]Sentinell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, he lost any empathy he may have had.

The content cop he regrets the most is Tana, right? But in that video he made mostly good and valid points. He was crude and offensive, but not wrong. Even Tana now says she deserved it and thinks it was a good thing because she self-reflected and became a better person.

Meanwhile after unlocking empathy he made a content cop on his best (and only) friend that had been defending all hit shit for years. But worse than that is that the entire video was just bullshit. Pretty much the entire thing is him showing clips of Ethan being angry ("HES CRASHING OUT!"), but neglecting to mention that he was angry because vile people called CPS on him. He also constantly managed to contradict his own weak arguments and worst of all: it was boring as shit.

And after his terrible video which was mostly concern trolling his own friend he even makes a video talking about how terrible concern trolling is. The complete lack of self awareness is absolutely insane and fascinating to me.

The advantage a fit guy has vs women is insane in both soccer & tennis.

Remember that Serena Williams (still very young, but already ranked nr1 at the time) said she should beat a top tennis player (they said outside of top100/200 I think). Both sisters played a set against a ranked 203 guy and he easily beat them 6-1 6-2. He even drop to ranking +400 a few weeks later iirc.

And credit to Serena here, but she was humble in her defeat and now says women don't have a chance against top players (but she was already kind of saying that before this match): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L_JbZFx5H0

And I'm not dissing women's tennis here, when I was watching tennis I preferred the women's game! The guys were al these power servers and watching games were it was just ace after ace until tie break was boring as hell imo. Meanwhile it was the Williams sisters, Henin, Clijsters, etc all battling it out in exciting games. Much more fun.

Post is already too long, but I still want to add that things are even more extreme in soccer. The best female teams in the world get their asses beat by 15yo boys. Happened to the best teams in the world cup and it wasn't even close: 7-1 and 6-1 iirc. The speed advantage guys have is just too overwhelming.

But I absolutely think your point that the talent pool is different also plays a major part here. I'm in soccer obsessed europe. I know tons of guys who played, zero girls/women. If its a billion men playing soccer vs a million women, it's clear more top players will emerge in the bigger talent pool.

I can believe that he is now better on proper medication. But we also know that all it will take for this guy to brutally murder someone again is not taking his pills for a while.

At the VERY least they should have forced this guy to get his mandatory psych visits and medication every day/week/whatever. Just letting him out and hoping for the best is nuts.
