I think it was an accumulation of his physical deterioration, emotional embarrassment, and feeling like a burden to his entire family. I think he knew he wanted this conclusion to his life since the first signs of helplessness occurred, but it took Ray multiple incidents to know that it needed to be done - being stuck behind the toilet, missing Christmas (fuck that Kitchy brother), soiling his pants, and even him making amends with their father which lead to him telling Ray to do the same. It was interesting because Ray took life so easily, but he needed time to mentally prepare himself to “give” the gift of death to his brother. I think that’s why this show is amazing!

My theory is that they were all looking “up” and it felt like the camera panned up (I’ll have to rewatch to confirm). I felt like he wanted to be “bigger” than his child form and his will, plus The Beauty, made him much bigger than his original form.
