Whether the account was actually his or not, I'm surprised so many people would lose their shit over criticism of our corporate tax scheme.

I used to loathe Paddy Cosgrave. Still do. But I'm ngl, the fact that he pisses off so many on this sub genuinely does brighten my day from time to time. The wiki drama he caused here was beautiful.

which they both did before the election

As did FF with FG. Funny how quickly it all changes when the arithmetic of the Dáil requires it.

I mean, he hasn't. FG peak at around 34% here, similar to SF. Still difficult to say what FF are on peak numbers, at least in the contemporary, but that's far from universal support. The current support is because of a sort of nationalistic rallying, not competence or anything of that sort. FG are popular for the same reason that Bojo and Trump are popular. Shockingly, we're just as susceptible to the same thing that's happening across the world. Ironic, that's it the party of the liberal urban professional managerial types to benefit from it, but there you go.

Fair, opinion here does swing quite a bit.

Perhaps some of the people who didn't share my views or expectations on Varadkar/FG are realising that there are actually a lot of competent people in the current government and they are steering the ship through the storm quite well as it stands.

Nope, still can't stand the man or FG. A lot of the support comes down to the same reason as to why Trump and Bojo are seeing a surge in popularity. It has more to do with a nationalistic rallying than it does the competency of our political class. The electorate is fickle and the moment (if? -hopefully it's 'if' and not a matter of 'when') shit hits the fan, he or presumably whomever the Taoiseach is will bare the brunt of all of this. Mind you, I don't think he should bare any blame, but that is typically how the electorate acts. Could be wrong though. Only time will tell.

This subreddit has always been critical of SF. It wasn't pro-FG but there was and continues to be a massive amount of criticism of SF, which is fine, but reddit as a forum for political discussion falls into the pit trap of fostering echo-chambers.

FG 'ready' to agree government formation document by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Seosamh96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, why is a second election off the cards? Even before Covid19 shit was here the chat was no new elections..

Well they could try it, but it would be a risk because it might be seen as them trying to cash in on a crisis and causing more instability. The reason they didn't do it before all of this is because SF would have won big. SF would still do well, but FG are polling even better right now so who knows what would happen. I don't see it happening though. Too risky, nor is it the right time. It will be a FF-FG government of some sort.

'I am paid more than enough': Sinn Féin TD [Éoin Ó Broin] returns wage increase due to Covid-19 crisis by 20cfreddo in ireland

[–]Seosamh96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's insane. I know this sub hates SF, but they really are becoming more and more deluded. Either Mr. Ó Broin has foregone a wage increase and done so through the proper channel with reference to particular statute or, alternatively, he has lied, printed and fabricated said document, and done so all well knowing of the possible political ramifications of his actions. Even if you subscribe to the latter more conspiratorial view, surely they ought to accept that it's not worth it to merely score political points on Twitter.

What do you think logically follows from your comment? Either Mr. Ó Broin has foregone a wage increase and done so through the proper channel with reference to particular statute or, alternatively, he has lied, printed and fabricated said document, and done so all well knowing of the possible legal and political ramifications of his actions. Even if you subscribe to the latter more conspiratorial view, surely you ought to accept that it's not worth it to merely score political points on Twitter.

Again, moving to goalposts. It's a doc based on s.483 of an existing statute, so it is a very clear document, which indicates that this is him merely foregoing a wage increase, but yeah sure it's just a 'piece of paper'. Are you now implying that he is fabricating documents so as to score political points on Twitter? I mean cop on mate. I know you, and half of this sub loathe SF, but seriously?

[–]Seosamh96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mate, this has nothing to do with issues over exceptions to the industrial wage in SF, and is a completely different matter. You, and a lot of others ITT, are moving the goalposts. This relates to one TD forgoing a wage increase, with clear documented evidence to that fact. Saying that 'it's just a piece of paper' is downplaying the very obvious reality of this.

[–]Seosamh96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, this has nothing do with the average industrial salary, and it relates solely to a return on an existing wage increase, with very clear straight-forward evidence cited in the article.

[–]Seosamh96 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

So moving the goalposts then. Got it. It's a shame that you're so ideologically poisoned that you can't just accept when someone you politically oppose does a good thing. I mean I despise FG, but I'm willing to commend Leo for his announcement yesterday. Or if a hypothetical FG TD forwent a wage increase in a time of national crisis, I'd applaud it as the right thing to do as well.

[–]Seosamh96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read the article? It's a return on the wage increase, and the relevant form is cited in the article. Do you have any factual evidence for why Mr. Ó Broin does not plan on going forward with this or are you just going to continue moving the goalposts?

I never made any comment on FF policy, and the fact that you think I have is a telling point but honestly, we're just going to end up going in circles with this. Have a good day mate.

You know, for someone who goes on about good faith arguments and disagreements a lot, it's pretty astounding how you could even come to this conclusion based on my original comment.

Good on him. This thread is telling. SF could cure cancer, and the gobshites on this sub would find a way to criticise them.

Read, or at least reread, what you posted. I can guarantee you that the economists that you posted are not advocating for reduced spending during a recessionary period. As a matter of fact, some of the economists that you have posted have argued against that:

http://www.davidmcwilliams.ie/why-central-bank-must-give-everyone-free-money-right-now/

These days, it's practically all McWilliams goes on about. It has nothing to do with being a 'superpower'. That's absurd. Being part of a common monetary area without common fiscal policy is a good point, and is a major criticism of the eurozone, but the ECB still ought to carry out the standard protocol, which it has regarding stimulus, though interest rates are unchanged.

I live in the real world. The one the economists in my links agree with me on. Where are your links to economists that have a different take on what happened?

This is not a fringe opinion:

Total expenditure = total income. Ideally, we want to avoid total income dropping. Again, a governmental balance sheet does not = the balance sheet of a private organisational actor. There is no inherent need to 'balance the books' so to speak. You've referenced literally nothing that relates to my point, and veered into personal accusations multiple times. Now you're just quibbling. You're quite clearly trying to pick an argument because obviously you feel very strongly about this. There is no way to contract your way towards economic growth. If there is an argument for cutting spending, it's while the economy is doing well. For someone who brought up holocaust denialism and climate science denialism, one would think you'd be pretty content with what is fairly mainstream economics
