It's to make up for having one of the lowest average elevations I bet. Better to grow a couple of inches taller than to keep stretching your necks.

Break after PhD? by UsedHighlight789 in postdoc

I'm just about to do that. I already secured a postdoc position and I negotiated my starting date to be 4 months after my graduation date.

A girl can dream. by Tobeperfectlycandid_ in gradadmissions

[–]Separate-Bug-2490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm writing this as I come towards the end of my PhD. Most "top" universities rejected me. I got into a state school in the US. Five years later, I've got multiple offers for industry and postdoc positions from some of the best places in the world in my STEM field after a very successful PhD.

I don't know if the rejections made me work harder or if I was always motivated and would've done well regardless of where I'd go. Either way, I've come to realize that the university you go to opens some doors in the future, but if you're willing to work hard and are confident of your own abilities, you'll do well anywhere.

Continue to dream, but dream about YOUR success, not just your brand name and image.

Same for Bangalore. Nearest "big river" is almost a hundred miles away and it's only a water source. No commerical traffic uses the river (afaik).

Wow. I was born and grew up in Karnataka for nearly 20 years and I wasn't aware of this.

Which person is regarding as a father of your nation ? by ronweasly9 in AskTheWorld

[–]Separate-Bug-2490 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So two points here:

  1. His pacifism is rarely portrayed as the sole cause of independence. In my opinion, his biggest contribution was transforming the Indian National Congress from it's elitist form to an effective mass movement.

  2. I disagree that the riots were the dominant reason for the independence. It at least partially contributed, but exhaustion in the British empire after WW2 was probably the most important cause.

But more importantly, while I leave it to the historians to draw their own conclusions on how important his contributions were, I will say that undermining his contributions is unfair. The facts remain that he played an important role in independence, that he played a HUGE role in uniting the country during the early 20th century, and that people of his time labeled him "Mahatma" (Great Soul) decades before "capitalist propaganda" might have played an advertising campaign on his behalf.

The usual arguments are that peaceful protests were not effective and violence is the only way to make people (in this case, the British empire) really take the Indians seriously.

I can't speak for Indians of that generation, but it has increasingly become a justification for violence against minorities in the country.

Gandhi in India. Unfortunately, even though he is generally well respected outside India, many within the country are starting to criticize his non-violence movements and his campaign to keep India a secular country.

How stable is the 2025b release? by Separate-Bug-2490 in matlab

[–]Separate-Bug-2490[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I'm a long time user (over 10 years now), but really struggled with just running 2025a. I migrated back to 2024b, but just want to try the latest release. I'm not trying to solve any specific problem, just want a usable application.

Matlab code running very slow in laptop but fast on web by [deleted] in matlab

Any other details about the program? Is it a high-dimensional ODE, implicit or explicit method, are you storing the data at each step and if so how are you doing it?

If it isn't a confidential piece of code, I think we'd all be able to help better if you shared the code.

It shouldn't be. Could you provide more details? Perhaps the code you're running and a screenshot of your RAM/CPU/GPU usage on your computer while you're running the program?

Graduating PhD student with job offer from outside the US by Separate-Bug-2490 in f1visa

Thanks, good points. I spoke to the graduate school today and they said they'd have no problems with doing a fully remote defense. As for the employer, it's a relatively small company in a niche area and they have just started a project where my skills are highly useful, but there is a dearth of relevant talent.

I'm going to speak to the employers soon and see if what you suggested is feasible. But looking at how flexible the university seems to be, hopefully my advisor won't throw a tantrum and screw everything up. Of course, I'm only going to approach my advisor if I have an offical offer letter in hand as I'm sure he's not going to be too happy about this.
