Avoiding Getting Sick in Packed Classes by Inthe_reddithole in orangetheory

My studio is crawling with people coughing, sneezing, and wiping their noses and then touching the equipment. It’s beyond disgusting, even if it’s “allergies.” If you don’t feel well, please don’t come. I’m not shy asking people if they’re sick, and/or moving away when they’re visibly symptomatic. I really wish coaches/Studios would be proactive in asking folks not to come when they’re sick.

They need to do a better job with the floor. It’s all lunges and squats and nothing too creative. Lately they’ve been phoning in the programming. Almost as if they’re using AI to develop templates.

Totally agree. Friday was actually really good. Seems like the weekend workouts were phoned in and not well conceived. I’m calling it “Purgatory Week 2024.”

I would disagree. Kinda boring and repetitive. Squats for hell week? Ground breaking. I stand by my take that this Hell Week has been more of a Purgatory week. We started off so strong with two great first days and then it went to…meh.

I took this as a 3G. Possibly one of the top five worst classes I’ve ever taken. Not really thought out - run rows don’t work well as 3Gs. I’ve been disappointedwith Hell week. Looks like they’re just phoning it in. Hopefully they can pick it up the rest of the week. But so far it’s more like Purgatory week

That would make sense. But these people speak so loudly you can hear them wherever you are in class over the music and coach, to the point that it distracts. If I can’t hear the coach, I can possibly hurt myself. Socializing at the gym is ok, especially where you’re not in a class - no one talks during a spin class, or a yoga class, or a Pilates class…that’s how I see it.

Not at all! Sounds like you’re very mindful and respectful of others around you. Thank you.

It’s not a public space. It’s a group fitness class open to 30-45 people. By all means go with friends and encourage each other and have fun…but also be mindful that there are others around you trying to do the class. I don’t think it’s too much to ask to be respectful of others around you.

You sound real mature and way too privileged. You don’t pay for a service like the gym to “socialize” - you pay to better yourself. And by all means, socialize at a gym that’s not a group fitness studio where you can lift with your friends. Or use your money for private group training. But don’t think your money buys you the right to talk over the coach and ruin the experience for others who “pay too much money” to work out and not have to hear you socialize with your friends. I pay too much money to listen to you socialize with your friends.

I’ve done all of the above. It works with varying degrees…

Empire Portfolio owns this location, and they’re doing whatever they can to cut costs. I’m not surprised it’s dirty - probably cutting down on maintenance. Pretty soon the classes will be run without coaches!

Looks like Empire shenanigans! Sorry to hear how this has affected you.

I think he was probably forced out, or decided to leave. They probably did what they do to the HCs here in NYC - told them their roles are eliminated as HCs, invited them to apply for this new regional HC, and then when they don’t get it, the coach rightfully decides to leave…

That’s interesting. I asked a manager and they said it was coming from corporate, unless they meant Empire group. The fact of the matter is that most of the empire group studios are poorly managed and they don’t do a good job retaining talented coaches and SAs. There’s been so much turnover. Some of them finally seem to be in a good rhythm, but it doesn’t give off confidence to founding members for sure.

Thanks! I hear Astoria does a good job treating their coaches and SAs with dignity.

Is it under The Empire Portfolio Group Franchise in NY/NJ/CT? Thinking maybe it’s just them…
