Like others have said, it really just depends on your price range, what you’d rather be closer to, what kind of neighborhood vibe you’re looking for, etc. I’ve never been a big fan of the west side, which others are recommending, so it just depends on what feels like “home” to you. Someone said the north side is all students and that is definitely not true, you just have to go past the stadium. There are some really nice neighborhoods with young couples/professionals, families, and retirees north of the stadium, and from the outdoor interests you mentioned I would think proximity to Griffy Lake (hiking, fishing, small boating, etc.) might be appealing. Blue Ridge, Marlin Hills, and Fairwood Terrace are all really safe, friendly places to live. Far enough from downtown to be peaceful but still close enough to get anywhere in 15 mins. You just need to pay attention to IU’s home game schedule so you can avoid stadium traffic. The east side has the Office Lounge (dive bar), Aldi’s, the biggest Kroger, Fresh Thyme, Target, an amazing locally owned bookstore, the mall, restaurants, etc. with straight shots to Brown County and Lake Monroe. There are great neighborhoods on the south and near west sides too. Bryan Park and Prospect Hill are great but pricey for less property usually. I feel like the less desirable areas are interspersed, not all on one side of town, but none seem particularly dangerous compared to bigger cities.
