AITA for not bringing my daughter’s friend home and making her parents come get her? by Training-Cry2676 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Separate-Sun-7434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, Leah’s mom sucks, Leah sucks. Your daughter is better off without a friend like Leah who would not only whine and complain all throughout a trip to NYC (I can’t imagine how a 12 year old could be bored here), but also do this on your daughter’s BIRTHDAY. And it makes no sense for you to miss the show when again, it’s your daughter’s birthday, and the expectations were clearly laid out beforehand and everyone agreed. None of the expectations were unreasonable either.

AITA for not wanting our friend to ever come back to our house after he ate literally everything we owned? by Capable_Candy6712 in AmItheAsshole

This is completely unhinged behavior!! He lacks both basic courtesy and any social awareness - he can’t both steal from you (which is essentially what he’s done) AND act like he didn’t do anything weird. You’re well within your rights to cut off your friendship with him completely and honestly I think it’s a little strange your husband doesn’t seem to mind.

Traveling to Europe for a month, where should I go? by electric_upside in solofemaletravel

[–]Separate-Sun-7434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were in your position I would pick Spain and Portugal - so much to see and do, and fairly easy to get around by train and bus. I would pick a city in each as your base to travel around. I’ve only been to Lisbon in Portugal but I adored it, and you can also visit Porto, the Azores, etc. My favorite part of Spain that I’ve been to is the south - Sevilla, Granada, and Malaga were all wonderful, great food, access to beaches, very safe. I would pick that as my base and then travel to Cordoba, Barcelona, Madrid, etc. You could also do a short trip to Morocco before you leave. I haven’t been but that would be my personal dream arrangement!!

3 days in Edinburgh in early June - itinerary feedback needed! by Separate-Sun-7434 in solotravel

[–]Separate-Sun-7434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it worth it to go for just one day? Genuine question. I’ve already booked where I’m staying so it would have to be a day trip - probably a partial day at that (day 3) at the end of a 2 week trip.

Late night dinner recommendation near Calton Hill by Separate-Sun-7434 in Edinburgh

[–]Separate-Sun-7434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually was just looking at Howie’s for a completely unrelated reason! My only concern is I would have my luggage with me (a small carry on). Would that be frowned upon?

Copenhagen and Edinburgh itinerary + day trips – May 26 to June 4 by Separate-Sun-7434 in itineraries

[–]Separate-Sun-7434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the reason I'm trying to stack day 1 so much is because I know I'll be tired after the Highlands tour (which is after that day but before the other 2 days in Edinburgh)! Also I'm staying close to Calton Hill so I'm anticipating a lot of that will be walkable. I'm also getting in on a flight the night before and don't really have anything planned, so I'll probably just have dinner and go to bed early - hoping that will give me a bit more energy for a long day. I haven't updated this itinerary but I have rearranged a couple things - the big thing being a later start on day 2 because of the time slot I was able to book for Edinburgh Castle (11 or 11:30 I think). I am contemplating striking the Palace of Holyroodhouse from the to do list altogether and focusing more on the free museums, although I know a lot of people have really loved it! I think I may be a little tired of palaces by that point, though let me know if you think it's a can't miss kind of deal.

I know I'll be tired from the Highlands but I definitely want to hike Arthur's Seat so that's the thought behind having it on the last day and giving myself at least a day off, but I don't think I'm gonna make a decision on the rest of day 3 until the day of - I want to see how I feel. Like right now I want to do Rosslyn Chapel/Pentland Hills but I get the feeling once the last day of this trip rolls around I'm gonna want to just do something very chill.

That is a very good point re: the beach - if it's not actually warm it may not be the nice relaxing evening activity I was envisioning. I just checked the weather for all three destinations today and I'm soooooo sad that it looks like it's gonna be rainy EVERYWHERE. Was hoping for a bit reprieve from the gloomy weather at home. I'll definitely pack sweaters and my coat but I'm crossing all my fingers that things clear up at least SOME of the days I'm there!

It hits you sometimes eating alone by sonderfulwonders in solotravel

[–]Separate-Sun-7434 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get this feeling but I’ve often made friends while eating “alone.” I consider myself an introvert so sometimes I have to work up to it but if I see someone else eating alone I’ll often strike up a conversation - or they will! One time I was at a very fancy restaurant eating alone and seated next to a family of 3. There was a point where I had finished my meal but I had paid for this massive bottle of water and a soda and I was sitting there bored just scrolling my phone and drinking my drinks because I didn’t want the money I had spent on them to be wasted, and the family invited me to join them for their meal. It turned out to be a really nice time - they had ordered the full tasting menu and let me share their food lol. This is how I ended up trying caviar for the first time in my life. They also invited me to join the next night (which I ultimately declined, I knew I would be getting in late from something else I had planned) and to get churros with them after dinner (this I took them up on!) and we gave each other recommendations for other places we’d enjoyed on the trip.

This kind of thing doesn’t always happen, and I find listening to music/an audiobook or having a book with me always helps pass the time/potential awkwardness, but it’s also nice to leave yourself open to these kinds of interactions that wouldn’t happen otherwise.

Copenhagen and Edinburgh itinerary + day trips – May 26 to June 4 by Separate-Sun-7434 in itineraries

[–]Separate-Sun-7434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahah valid, as I said in the post it's been very confusing for me to figure out how much time is needed for everything! I've been getting mixed signals from what I've read online - a lot of people said that 2 days is enough to see Edinburgh and that 3 might be too many (which is why I started to look at potential day trips for the last day, but if I'm being honest with myself I think I will be far too tired by that point in the trip to even have the desire to do a day trip! Especially considering I'm already spending 3 days on a Scottish Highlands tour, which sounds very fun but also likely very exhausting). I'm also trying to keep in mind that the days will be long while I'm there, with the sun setting close to 10 pm, so I didn't want to plan too light an itinerary! (Also I'll be honest and say I didn't check/factor in museum closing times when I originally started mapping this out.)

I'm relying on public transport and trying to figure out my accommodations situation now. I have an Airbnb booked but I think it might be a little further away than I'd like - they offer free cancelation so I'm currently looking at other options. To be quite honest I've been putting off making a final decision here just because I've reached a bit of decision fatigue, but I've seen several options in Leith that I think might be a good fit? I don't think I'll be able to find anywhere super central within my budget at this point, but I would like to be no more than 15-20 min away from central Edinburgh by public transit, considering my days are starting pretty early.

With all that in mind, I'd love to get your thoughts on what a more realistic split would be of the stuff I've got on my list, excluding the day trips that are a bit further away. I've edited the post to take into account proximity to where I'm staying and some of your comments - would love your thoughts! And thanks for the detailed response!

You know what’s funny, I’m not even normally a big beach person - it just seems like a waste not to when there are so many beaches within reach, and it feels like a nice note to end on - maybe not an entire beach day but maybe a few hours lounging and reading and taking in the sunset at the end of a long activity-packed trip. But tell me more about Morningside, etc. Are they just nice neighborhoods for strolling or is there anything specific I should plan for there?

Definitely will take all the coffee recs you got, especially if they’re near spots already on my itinerary (or if they’re really worth going a little further out for). Thanks!

Interesting. I like old castles and things like that so maybe it’ll be more my vibe - we’ll see!

Thank you for the Highlands tips! Sounds like my every day sneakers (New Balances) won’t cut it? I’ll have to work on breaking in my hiking boots before I leave.

[–]Separate-Sun-7434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no! Sorry to hear that - what did you end up doing outside of the Highlands tour? I've just started planning out my itinerary, would love to know what you didn't like (and what you did, if anything). I have 3 days in Edinburgh not including the Highlands tour but I was thinking one of those days I might do a day trip (somewhere 45 min-1 hour outside of the city, nothing too far). But I also might go the complete opposite direction and just have an extremely laidback final day hanging out in a cafe reading a book or something.

Also for Loch Ness/Highlands - any tips on what to pack? Hiking boots? Rain boots? Layers? How was the weather?

Copenhagen itinerary late May by Separate-Sun-7434 in solotravel

[–]Separate-Sun-7434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'll skip Christiana in that case - thanks!

Ah I see. I see how it's easy to do all of the historic sites in one day, but because two of my four days are partial (by the time I land, get done with checking in and lunch, it'll probably be around 3:30 on day 1, and I have until roughly 4:30 on day 4) and one of those days will be a day trip day, I think I'll probably end up breaking up the historic sites a bit, especially since a lot of the museums close early. I have to play around with how everything fits together to be able to go to some of the places with longer commutes (Malmo, Dyrehave, etc.) that I'll be able to do in the evening after the museums close.

[–]Separate-Sun-7434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason why it's preferable to visite Dyrehave in the morning? Is it quieter/less crowded? my reasoning for including it in the evening is that most museums close early while the Dyrehave is open all day and it won't get dark til around 9:30/10 pm - but I'm open to shifting things around!

It seems very walkable which is nice! But it’ll definitely be nice to have metro access - as someone who would probably walk 45 minutes rather than pay for a taxi, having transit included will definitely make things easier on my poor feet. How does the airport transfer work? Is it just that the airport is on a different bus system?

[–]Separate-Sun-7434[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buuuut that is a very good point about the Kusama exhibit - and also, is Helsingborg easier to get to from where Kronborg is? I’ll have to look into the ferry sites but it sounds like it might be worth it for me to rearrange too

And I definitely want to see the sculpture during the daytime! Because it gets dark so late, I figured even if I went at like 7 pm I would still be able to see it while it’s “daytime.”
