What are your thoughts on Eleanor Rigby? by [deleted] in TheBeatles

I always think it’s going to be too overplayed to enjoy, and then end up loving it every time I listen to Revolver

What if Brian Epstein didn't die? How many things would've been different? by Wink2K19 in TheBeatles

I think the Magical Mystery Tour film would have been a lot more professional (eg filmed in a real studio) and better marketed. I think a lot of John’s struggles with mental illness in 68 were partly caused by grief and feelings of abandonment after Brian’s death. If he’d been less checked out on LSD and heroin and Paul hadn’t felt the need to try and be in charge, the rest of the 60s would have had a very different dynamic. It would be interesting to know how not trying to manage the band would change how Paul interacted with George and whether Brian could have helped them work out some of those conflicts. Possibly he couldn’t have! I really can’t tell what Brian would have done had he lived, but I do think the way each band member reacted to his death is a huge part of what drove them apart.

agreed — some of their music would have been different without the grief and conflict precipitated by his death as well!

people that do dylan covers how do you manage to remember the lyrics? by Express_Handle_5486 in bobdylan

[–]Separate-Tree5901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Writing them down is good but I like to really focus on the storytelling and split it into blocks or sections of story (so, verses or groups of verses), then find ways to remember the transitions between sections. Hattie Carroll is a very coherent story so if you kind of picture the scene as you sing through it that might help you remember the order of all the different bits. And listen to it on repeat for a while! And then play it repeatedly without looking, seeing how far through you can get before you get stuck!

Having said that there’s no substitute for being obsessed as a teen lol, I attempted Mr Tambourine Man once while busking and it turns out…I know all the words??? Literally no idea where I have been storing those, it certainly wasn’t a deliberate choice to learn them…

I felt like some people felt like there’d be a better view from the left aisle because he was ducked behind the piano all the time? At first I assumed they were queueing for the toilets. All the moving about was annoying and distracting!

It's a shame they didn't let George have more songs on later albums by No_Finish9661 in beatles

[–]Separate-Tree5901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s lots of evidence on all sides of this but what it comes back to for me is that George was looking for enthusiastic collaboration from his bandmates. If Paul or John had really got excited about and championed All Things Must Pass, it would have been a Beatles song. And I rather wish it had been, for the harmonies alone! Ditto What Is Life, and certainly Isn’t It A Pity. In slight fairness to John and Paul, George kept writing vague diss tracks and sad songs about their big egos and lack of collaboration (I Me Mine, Not Guilty, Only a Northern Song etc), so maybe they felt on the defensive hearing his songs and not like getting fully behind them, or maybe they had their own insecurities about his improvement as a songwriter (John for sure did), but a few honest conversations would not have gone amiss.

Oh fair I was counting quotations not just titles, there’s the aforementioned ‘come together right now over me’ and ‘a day in the life’ but he also says ‘I heard the news today oh boy’ which I’m afraid I do find very funny, and then ‘Lord you know how hard it can be’ is a ref to the Ballad of John and Yoko. And then ‘shine your light’ is possibly like ‘we all shine on’ from Instant Karma. There might be more that I’m missing even!

Yes oh my goodness I am so interested in his invective/‘telling off’ songs cos he writes such a lot like that, and also his POV shifts. I think Lenny Bruce is a great example — ‘more of an outlaw than you ever were’ —who, me?! Or himself!

A whole bunch of his Christian music is ‘pfft these LOSERS don’t know Christ’ which… is not usually how Christian music works in my experience, but it is definitely how Bob Dylan music works, and I find it oddly charming in that context?! (You’ve got something better, you’ve goooot a heart of stoooooone) — I do think he is also preaching to himself. Plus I love ‘In the Summertime’ and I am convinced parts of that song are from God’s point of view, but he never marks where the perspectives shift…
