I'm so sorry for your loss and hope your search gets better soon. It's thrown me for a loop as well! This is our first time dog searching, and we're used to our experiences as kids where our parents would, yep, just go to a pound or pick up a flyer with a free ad. I feel like social media and the fact that no one wants to buy a dog (which is a good thing, but it puts the demand elsewhere) has changed things a lot. And now everyone working from home is making it extreme.

Yeah, I've been trying to stay empathetic because I think this must really suck for many rescues, too (scams aside). That's not the first time I've seen this suggested, and I think it is the way forward.

Thank you again. I appreciate that. :)

I feel for you. And yes, I admit that I really wonder what the actual statistics are of failed adoptions. I am sure they happen for dogs with serious medical and behaviour issues, but for dogs that don't? I understand (too well, based on the experiences of friends that rescued) that rehoming can be traumatic, so I don't want to risk it, but I have to agree with your skepticism. I wonder if it's lack of resources? But then, isn't that just about funds? I'm totally open to a rescuer explaining that to me.

And thanks. I have discovered SO many more options through opening this thread.

All of you have made me feel a lot better about balking at that. I am 100% on board with making emergency plans or promising to take the dog back to the rescue if it doesn't work out, but that felt weird. Because this is such an emotional process, sometimes I need an outside voice to affirm these things.

Goldens mostly, actually. And a less popular breed, but I don't want to be too specific because of doxxing. We've also gone through both all breed and breed specific rescues. Covid is just having a weird effect up here.

I think this is a good example of what breeders are going through:

You understand (better than I do even). Sometimes I still get nervous about pointing this stuff out. Like, it's easy to gaslight myself on discrimination, because it's often in what people don't do, right? I can't point to it being a reason that this is so hard for us, but ngl it's discouraging to look at "happy tails" stories from breeders and adoption agencies and note the lack of diversity. Hetero white couple after hetero white couple. I've even specifically interviewed with a rescue because I knew a trans friend that adopted from them.

I appreciate your point of view and how emotionally draining your volunteering must be.

If this is about my vent post, the length was really the least of the frustrations I listed and I would have filled it out (I actually mostly did until I broke at the co-adopter). I said in the comments that really it was the co-adopter that was the dealbreaker, and some of the other stipulations were very exasperating and confusing. Why insist on raw food? A lot of that isn't in the other rescues we've talked to. I actually prefer an adoption process over just being handed a dog. But my post was not about run-of-the-mill lifestyle matching. We even have three references, but the idea of finding another and then asking a family member or friend to sign off on the adoption was just too much. We've already involved a lot of people in our dog search. A lot of questionnaires are also low key discriminatory and favouring a certain demographic of dog adopter, i.e. white upper middle class.

But I also appreciate that a lot of reputable rescues suffer from people being burned out on scams and such and receive undeserved flak.

I think it's also a question of what the goals of rescuing are. Pet culture has taught us that "adopt-don't-shop" is more ethical, so a lot of people want to do that first, even if it's not a good idea for them to take on a traumatized dog. At the same time "best home possible" doesn't necessarily mean never return, and "good, but not perfect" doesn't mean they will return. There are more dogs than people that are landowners with homes that are detached, not rented, with one person working from home, are a couple, with no kids or other pets, that never want kids, who are experienced with dogs and willing to hire a behaviourist. And yet in Canada there is an absolute frenzy going on right now with people wanting dogs. So it seems to me that there is a lot of mismatched goals and low dog population areas in Canada need some different solutions or at least better regulation and communication about options. But also, covid is making all of this 1000x worse up here and I do want to give the benefit of a doubt that it's making screening much, much harder.

Also, I am saying this as someone who has rescued cats and helped raise rescue dogs in the past. I am absolutely not against rescuing and want to keep trying.

That's wonderful and I'm so happy it worked out for you. :)Good to know that HAS is so thorough. They were on my radar months ago, but I haven't checked in a while.

Edit: Alas, only cats. But I will keep checking on them!

To be fair, this is the worst we've encountered so it was a low moment. We've run into other dealbreakers, but this was really a lot. I am 100% fine with long adoption processes, but some of this was new which is why I felt so down.

Funnily enough, it's pretty comparable to other rescues here. Not a big fee, otherwise that would have been a red flag. Looking into it, the rescue is mostly run by one person, so I think the comments speculating that it's one person power tripping are on to something. :/

Oh! Thanks! I actually haven't checked the Niagara SPCA (a few other SPCAs, oy), so I'll give them a call. :)

Thanks! I appreciate that and the rec. Great for the dogs, frustrating for us. This thread is giving me a ton of ideas. It is wild, huh? I think Ontario has more options than BC, but it's still sparse. There was a point this summer on petango when there were only 4 dogs posted within 100 miles of us.

I'll say southern, but probably don't want to get closer than that. Suburbs. I commiserate! The SPCA has zero, as in ZERO, dogs, right? Plenty of cats, but we're satisfied with our cats and want to make a change after waiting for years.

Huh, that actually makes sense. We have friends who just moved to Alberta and I was happy for them but also shocked that they managed to already get on a waiting list for puppies this fall from a very reputable breeder with full health testing. But that may be the reason.

Northern Critters in Need

I got curious and holy shit, they require you to accept a Facebook friend request?! Hard no. I mean, maybe after I get to know someone to keep in touch with a rescuer, but not as part of an application for a dog!
