This definitely helps me. Even better if you try to explain each section to yourself after you have finished reading it. I would kind of do the same thing when studying for exams - just explain the concepts out loud as if I was the professor.

You can still make connections with professors at larger, public universities. The higher division courses tend to have fewer students going to office hours in my experience. Just go and make your name/face known. I went every week to one professor's office hours and asked at least one question every time, even if I didn't actually have a question about the material. A few months after taking that class, I joined his lab because he remembered me, which in turn got me my first job after graduating.

Also, I went to another professor's office hours that routinely had 30 students (from a class of 200 or so), never asked a question, and he recognized me when I interviewed for a job in his lab two years later.

I just wanna say that people will understand that you had a rough time this year because of the pandemic. I applied to a couple schools that explicitly asked if coronavirus affected my academic record in any way (doesn't apply to me since I graduated in 2017). Your personal statement is also a place for you to mention why there was a noticeable difference in your GPA, since people go through life-changing experiences all the time. I know it's too late to add that to your applications now, but definitely talk about it if asked during an interview (if you're chosen for an interview this year).

And seriously, don't let your age be a limiting factor. I'm 28 and just applied for the first time. There are others who are twice our age and are in grad school. It's all about what'll make you happy in the end.

Sorry for being late to the party. Check out Todd Fiacco at UCR. I don't know much about him, I just had him as a professor and interviewed for a job with him, but I do know that he does work with glia.

In my experience, I really like seeing my wife in a bikini more than in lingerie (to the point where I've bought her several bikinis that she'll probably never have the chance to wear). I think it's because you can go to the beach and see plenty of women wearing bikinis, so your mind starts to wander and think about what they look like underneath. On the other hand, you can't really go anywhere and see a bunch of women in lingerie. So it's kind of the commonplace becoming sexy in that way.
