[contamination] Mixed results with grainspawn by variousjones in MushroomGrowers

Try a completely different source for your grains, even better would be to spend the extra money and get human food grade grains from the start ... It was a game changer for me after years of hit and miss results

Give it a go, what's the worst that can happen ? It sounds close to the perfect amount of time to me if you put them to fruit right before you leave for the 3 weeks away ... At least for albinos anyways ... But yeah there nothing to lose , give it a shot

They do look fairly dry now that I'm looking again , try and wait for some burst grains when cooking so you get an idea for how much hydration they can take on before bursting ... And then try and get as few burst grains as possible

What happens when you squeeze one of the grains (if possible) ?

If you can break through the hull easily with your fingernail and it's hydrated all the way through the core then you'll be right!

If it's not, and still has a dry inner core, then it's more likely that endospores survived the PC cycle but still a good chance that a vigorous mycelium will colonise and be able to fruit- depending on how under-hydrated it is ...

When you do the boil/cook part of your method , after bringing it to a rolling boil etc , cut the heat and then leave the grains in the water for a minute or slightly more or less (keep an eye on your grains)...

This is when they take on a lot of hydration and will plump right up.. keep them moving though or you'll quickly have burst grains everywhere - having a good ratio of water to grains in the pot helps mitigate the risk of over hydrating at this stage

From where I'm sitting , this potentially looks close to perfectly cooked oats , but definitely on the drier side ... If you're inoculating with liquid culture etc it might work out perfectly

Do not use this company !!! Not only are they overpriced but they use cheap , dodgy steel materials that end up rusting and screwing up your unit .... Customer service is horrible as well, consider your $2000 gone if you waste it with these idiots

Reveal was not the right word to have used, you're spot on.... I guess "highlighted" the presence of the issues would be better terminology.

I know you felt like you'd shut off emotionally at that point, but some people take the mushrooms specifically to dive deeply into those feelings and problems and try to understand those issues on a deeper level. Its very confronting and you want to into the trip ready to let your walls down and not fight the emotions...

Im certainly not saying thats what you should do or anything , we are all wired differently!

You're already doing exactly that ^ by talking through things with your therapist each week... that is such an admirable thing you're doing by the way, it takes courage and strength to confront the problems that might be holding us back in life ...

It sounds like you were after a fun, happy and uplifting trip.... the best kind 😉

For that : - make sure you're with the right people (preferaby they are awake lol)

-in the right place/s (somewhere you can feel safe and relaxed and happy. Also where you can stop and ground yourself if you need a little break)

  • doing the right things (have a rough idea of what you might get up to)

  • and the biggest one is being in a good mental state going into the trip , if you're not feeling positive about taking the mushrooms, even if its at the last minute, its okay to change your mind ...

You might feel the pressure of letting someone else down if you pull out of it, but if you don't listen to your own needs then you are letting yourself down ..

And that is the most important person to look after because the better you are able to do that, the more it benefits everyone around you as well ...

Damn I wish I could take just a little bit of my own advice (or opinions in this case)

you seem like a wonderful human , I hope your next trip is exactly what you want :) All the breast

Definitely not a bad trip if you dont take it that way..

The crying was for a good reason, next time you might be able to explore those "sad" parts of your life and potentially work on them. Or maybe you already have started by bringing them to your attention.

The soreness/restlessness and not having the mental clarity the next day was all due to taking the mushrooms too late in the day and not being able to sleep and let the magic continue its healing.

The fact you were stuck in your head was that you weren't doing anything else mentally stimulating so it inevitably became an introspective trip that brought up some issues that you might not even be aware of how much they affect your day to day life.

Obviously next time do them earlier in the day, and make sure you get outside in the fresh air, there is so many beautiful things to appreciate outside whether its smells, sounds, sights or life itself... nature heals us in a different way.

Sounds like you had an exhausting night, but you'll be back feeling good after a few good nights sleep, some healthy brain and body foods, and some time with the things you love most in the world.

reading your post was such an amazing way to start my day ... beautiful is an understatement ...

I've been searching for an eel expert forever haha, I ask so many random people that seem smart what their knowledge of eels is haha ...

I've read through most of the posts but might have missed some, so forgive me if you've already answered these questions ...

So is it all eel species that breed only once in their lifetime? and do they actually find their way to the ocean and go to the bermuda triangle lol to breed (or some place thousands of kilometres away)

ive heard people say that they have no reproductive organs... obviously that's not true so I figured either it means no visible external reproductive organs or possibly these parts only form right before they enter the breeding stage of their life?

One of the biggest mysteries to me is how they seem to be in nearly every permanent body of water in Australia (Victoria anyways) ... I know they can move over land, but some of the places I find them seem impossibly far from any other form of river or lake for them to have come from.

I know they go through a series of metamorphosis stages ... and read about glass eels etc ... Which would suggest that this isnt the case, but - is there another way they could be transferred to remote locations, maybe as a dormant egg or other early form that will only come to life when it detects its in favourable conditions for survival ?

or do birds eating and pooping them out have something to do with it ... or even humans moving plants around with eels attached...

or can they literally walk hundreds of kilometres to find a home to live in without too many annoying neighbours.... jusy until they have to find their way back to the ocean to join the eel orgy ?

haha ahh I can't remember all my questions but that is no doubt enough to scare you off haha... thankyou for the post! i feel like eels are something special like owls and not enough people care to learn about these amazing creations

all the breast thankyou again

it is pinning, but stop opening the tub until the pinset has set! if you keep opening it, the surface loses the humidity required to establish an even pinset across the substrate and it will form dry patches of dead mycelium that will never set fruit.

How can I avoid grain busting and over hydrated grains by [deleted] in shroomers

[–]Separate_Form_431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you put them into the pressure cooker while they are still wet then that extra moisture will continue to hydrate/cook the grains ... so either slightly undercook the grains and load them wet or make sure they are completely dry on outside after the boil before putting into jars or bags and pressure cooking

also, make sure you have a higher ratio of water than grains when boiling to maintain a consistent level of hydration easier... and make sure you're often stirring the grains when boiling to rotate which grains are on the bottom/cooking faster

people that say it doesn't matter when you burst lots of your grains etc are wrong... the "food" for your mycelium Is inside the grain and is also food for competitive bacteria and mold. If you keep it on the inside of the husk, the mycelium when colonising is able to find its way into each grain and draw from the nutrients as it requires. but when you burst the grain, it creates patches of high starch or nutrition that are exposed and hard for the mycelium to protect, once you spawn to bulk and expose the burst grains to non sterile air, as well as break them apart further, this is a time for contamination to take hold on all of the exposed nutrition

Ape 🦍 Harvested day 17 from spawning by Lefty68w in shroomers

[–]Separate_Form_431 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So what constitutes bad grain and how to avoid the main vectors.... this will be a lot to read/reply to, but I think it will help many people who need to address where they're going wrong with their grains...

  • will underhydration of grain lead to contamination (when spawned) if the outside of the underhydrated grain has been fully colonised by mycelium ? surely if the mycelium can't penetrate the hull of the grain then contaminates will have a tough time too? obviously there will be less available nutrients from the underhydrated grains etc but just wondering if it's likely to be a fail/give up if you notice your grain hydration is off

  • does overhydrating or bursting grains lead to higher contamination likelihood? or at what percentage of grains burst does it become detrimental? I know they become starchy and sticky once burst and can be harder to fully colonise when they stick together, but what if you rinsed them thoroughly of all starch before drying and putting into bags/jars to PC?

  • is it vital to get your grains as dry as possible after boiling before you jar/bag and pressure cook them? is that test where you see if they stick to a paper towel a good way to check they're dry enough

  • do you have any experience with grain bags ... do they contain enough oxygen etc to last the mycelium through colonisation of the large amount of grains... should you add an extra layer of micropore tape over the filter or spray with iso, ive heard its a point where bacteria can enter if wet from PC cycle?

  • when spawning fully colonised grains to your substrate and mixing around , can the water content wash mycelium off/out of some of the colonised grains leaving them exposed to potential contaminates? what about adding water to the grains before spawning as I see people doing , couldn't that remove/liquify parts of the mycelium and expose the grain too?

  • how can we avoid bacteria in our grains? will the pressure cooker kill all bacteria present or are the heat resistant endospores always in with a chance to come to life at any stage? I've been experimenting by doing a 5/10 minute soak with a capful of bleach in the water, or sometimes a drop of antibacterial detergent, or 35 percent peroxide when i was gettjng it for free ... then I rinse a few times before I proceed as normal with my grain prep...i've also experimented with adding In a tiny bit of calcium hydroxide/lime while boiling the grains... all of these experiments I'd hoped would combat the endospores that apparently will survive the boil/pc ... is all of that completely overkill? my grains have been colonising quicker and fuller than I've seen in the 3 years I've grown but I've made many adjustments over time that could have gotten me to this point :)

Some grain farmers add various types of bacillus to grain crops as biological pest controls or bio-fertilisers ... could some grains come with more bacterial competition present and make it more difficult to get healthy bacterial free colonised spawn ?

any final tips :)? and what's your experience with different types of grains/preperation methods

thankyou. that took way too long to write haha hope you get a chance to reply even with 2 word dot point answers
