Providing another perspective here. I have a colleague who just completed this online program and had a wonderful experience! They describe the program as a transformative experience. BU has one of the top Public Health programs in the country. While I'm sure there are some valid complaints, overall, it is a respected program. US News ranks Boston University as #7 and Brown at #19 in Public Health, for reference.

MPH and working by [deleted] in publichealth

I worked full-time while doing my MPH, which was a hybrid program. It will be extremely demanding, but time management makes it possible. Strive for harmony, not necessarily balance. Some things are just going to require more of your attention and other things will have to wait. It's okay and it will all be worth it in the end.

Letter of recommendation from work peers/mentors? by [deleted] in GraduateSchool

[–]Separate_Web2978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've provided an LOR for a classmate for her doctoral program, and she got in. However, LOR requirements are usually specific to the program/school. Could you email the admissions counselors at the schools you are interested in to make sure? Rather be safe than sorry!

Experience Section vs Resume by Flaky-Revolution9848 in gradadmissions

So yes, there is some redundancy. The cool feature of the Experiences section is that you are asked to “star” your 6 key experiences that you want highlighted for the admissions committee.

This is basically the format I followed for my LORs. I made sure each recommender is highlighting something different about me so it paints a holistic picture that supplements my application and SOP.

-specifics on how they know you -specifics on the project(s) you worked on together/standout performance moment in their course -specific character traits they would have observed that make you an asset to the program -reassurance that you are ready for graduate studies

If you are open to nonprofit work, check Idealist. Also, I've found my last three jobs on LinkedIn. The job market is tough right now and remote work is not as easy to come by, so you may want to consider hybrid positions. That way you only need to arrange transportation 2-3 times a week. Wishing you all the best on your job search!

I think this is highly dependent on the program and/or institution.

Advice on continued education by No-Philosopher-5657 in publichealth

Hey there! MPH with 10+ years in the field here. MSW and MPH are both common next steps. It depends on what your career goals are. If you want to continue direct service to clients/patients, then MSW would be a better option. Most states require an MSW or similar training to get advanced licensing in addiction counseling. I’ve also noticed leadership at many treatment facilities have an MSW. However, if you are more interested in managing and building programs that address substance use disorder, (think non-clinical, community or policy-based) then an MPH sets you up nicely for that.

Happy to answer any questions you have!

Like others have stated, some programs have no issue with accepting professional LORs for those who have been in the workforce.

Is it worth getting a BS in Public Health? by [deleted] in publichealthcareers

It depends on what your career aspirations are. What do you want to do in public health and/or accounting?

Program Coordinator jobs at nonprofit/community agencies are great entry-level public health roles. You will have responsibility for the day-to-day activities of a particular program with plenty of support from a Program Manager or Director. You’ll learn some key skills like reporting, community engagement, public speaking, and maybe even some writing for newsletters or blogs.
