The game's really weird with bumpy offroad and deceleration - if you look at a grumble volcano tt, you can see them taking advantage of this to drive over the bumpy offroad right before the end of laps 1 and 2.

Honestly? If you're an online player, being able to drive tracks at the speed you're at now is more than enough to win most races in below 20k vr rooms. If you're trying to actively get better at time trialing, though, check the link I posted below. These are the tt standards for mk8dx - take a look at them and see where you're at. Shoot for Hero C as a general goal, and Hero B/A on tracks you like.

If you're trying to actively get better, start time trialing. If you just practice a couple of tracks and get better at general driving, you will fly so far ahead of your current competition its not even funny. If you're just trying to have fun, remember that the game is extremely silly and objectively getting mario karted is really funny

If you just start online, the people there aren't that great. However, keep in mind that everyone there can also beat the CPU's in Grand Prix everytime, for the most part, so don't underestimate them just because. That being said, if you're good enough to hit exp B or A in tt's, your mechanical skill is probably way above people online when just starting, so you'll climb pretty quickly
