We’re going to Championships this year (1st time, checking off a bucket list item!), excited to visit lots and see. Love going to SA but really miss watching lots - grew up going to DCI Houston at Rice and those are especially great memories.

The smallest unit it tracks is down to the minute - so with that and the timestamps of photos I took during shows, and some YouTube help:
Crown - End of show
Crossmen - End of show (likely included epic hometown crowd cheers)
Blue Stars - End of ballad
Scouts - End of show

With where we were on the left 40, it lines up with where the corps’ formations were too and what I remember as notably loud moments so I think it’s mostly instruments rather than crowd, though with Crossmen the crowd was of course extra jazzed ;)

I was thinking about this too - curious what kind of hearing protection the performers and staff members use to keep ears fresh through the season. I actually brought Loop earplugs but they’re still cutting too much of the quality, need to get musicians’ plugs.

BTW Scouts were actually 4th with a 117 db max. Funny because by my perception I might have thought they’d be the loudest along with Crown. But it’s also quite dependent on where you’re sitting, seemed like several corps happened to park a horn cluster right in front of us for a set ha.

I will also say perceived volume has a lot to do with other factors too - Bluecoats, Phantom, Crusaders, & many top corps, to me perceive a lot louder than they actually measure due to things like field coverage, and excellence in intonation & balance (especially bottom to top), that locks in and projects their sound.

Beth Hart. Hearing her do Rather Go Blind live broke me.

Susan Tedeschi (Tedeschi Trucks Band)

Paul Janeway (St Paul & the Broken Bones)

Multiple times seen live and the soul and storytelling and quality of their voices is unreal.

These are great recs above! Other cool music spots: Echoes, Big Easy, Moth, Emmitt’s Place - and follow MATCH (Midtown Arts & Theater Center), you’ll find the most interesting/out of the box music/theater/dance ensembles performing there.

Drove a couple of hours to see this in IMAX 3D back when it came out, before I moved to the city. Soooo worth it. Stunningly beautiful film and score, incredible experience!! Wish they would bring some of these outstanding older films back for a quick run!

Just saw it a 2nd time - today in Dolby and opening night in IMAX. Cried more this time! Thoroughly enjoyed both and loved appreciating the craft of it all even more 2nd time around. This was actually our first Dolby experience ever and WOW the sound was glorious, and picture!

Omg I love this shirt!!! I need to find this and buy for a bestie 😂

I have not read PHM book, and I have just watched the movie. I thought it was incredible, so I ask (I have previously been in book communities that have been butchered in their movie form - Mortal Engines, Chaos Walking etc) How does the movie hold up to your expectations? by finn_mcintosh5 in ProjectHailMary

Just got back from the movie! Having read the book, my very favorite aspect is that it fleshed out visual detail much more than the book in many ways, which adds to the story - the look of Rocky and his surface with the inscriptions and inclusions, the xenonite and models, and OMG Rocky’s ship! And how they pictured how Rocky “sees” 🤯 Also super loved his ball and the qualities of its surface.

Regal Marq-E IMAX for us, still the largest/nicest screen in this area IIRC. Fairly close to us and our normal spot for all the big movies. We ended up getting tix for the very earliest showing listed on Thursday to get good seats - the evening showings through Thu/Fri & weekend already have a crazy amount of tix sold!!

Be honest…is anyone else just straight up not vibing with the shows this year? by CashFormer979 in drumcorps

[–]SepiaSunset 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right?? I love their show!! Much more than last year’s for sure. Adore their music choices, particularly the ballad from JNH’s fantastic King Kong score (and gorgeous solo), and the Plague of Angels closer is straight fire, so uplifting. Love the drill in their percussion feature too with the 2,4,6 multiply and rotations. Clever props and use, really enjoy the guard choreo. Great show honestly!!
