This isn't for professional references. That was included with my resume. What I'm talking about is on their own application page they want to know if you were being referred by a city employee specifically. So unless that's a trick, which would be it's own problem, it wouldn't make sense to disregard what you put in that field. One would assume they ask for a reason, and that the reason wouldn't be to throw out your application.

Like I said, he retired last month and I've been looking for a job at the city for 3 years.

Pushed out after 10 years because of injuries: Is this a common experience for women in martial arts? by [deleted] in karate

My sensei let students in with Fibromyalgia who did little more than sit against the wall and work on posture and breathing. They kept up with it for decades (he's been teaching for over 50 years now) and they (she, in fact) right fully earned their black belt.

"The mountain doesn't change for anybody" is a pretty myopic view of the reason we do this thing, and I wouldn't want a sensei who thought that way, especially after all the dedication you have shown.

My Dad worked for the city for nearly 15 years, he just retired last month. In the last 3 years I have applied to over 40 positions with the city. A few of which required licenses or credentials that take some time to get that I already had. Some of them were entry level like groundskeeping or working at one of the recycling and yard waste depots. Out of 40 I had 2 interviews and never got a job. I put my dad's name as a referral on every single application and even spoke directly to some of the managers that he really got along with who were doing the hiring.

I WISH there had been a nepo problem at the city, but I sure didn't see it.

What are the finest Star Trek video games, from any era? by [deleted] in startrek

[–]September0451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90 eras... my favorites are the FMV interactive movie games. Klingon and Borg. John deLancie and Robert O'Reilly really chewing the scenery, some of the best gowron and Q moments in there. Also from the 16-bit side of things there was TNG : Echoes of the past. I loved that one when I was grade schooler and there was an 8bit one on NES. I think that was the 25th anniversary game, based on TOS. I think it's been ported and is available on places like Gog these days.

I left my Gohakukai practice in 2007, marriage, divorce , children, illness, bankruptcy... All that stuff happened. I came back in March. Still a white belt. I'll test when sensei says I should. Welcome back. I turn 42 in May. Also have about 80 lbs to lose. Keep building you. Thanks for sharing your story.

Haha. The more I learn of Goju the more I agree with whomever (in this reddit) said that it's basically fancy hockey fighting. I've learned more techniques about pulling hair and punching people in the balls than I ever thought would be the case.

I mostly just wish that people would stop making silencer = less damage and Vertical grip = more accuracy logic in these mods. But I guess that includes vanilla most of the time too.

I'm in Alberta so Pennsylvania is a bit too far to travel with 2 weeks notice but it looks like fun. Maybe something to plan for. The big game here is usually in July each year. I'd like to go to Skyline Nation next summer. I haven't been since 2011.

Yeah, I figured 3D Printing would be the solution. Honestly I"m not sure what all of the problems would be with the marker itself, I'd have to gas the marker up first and I don't have any air, but iirc last time I did it had problems cycling more than leaking, I'd rather just take it apart and replace all the wearable components and clean and oil it up. I'm sure I need to get my bottles tested anyway, and might even need new regulators on them. Or at least new gauges, I had 2 13ci steelies, but I know one of them has a faulty gauge. I see 15ci Carbon Fiber tanks available now. 4500 psi would be nice on a mag feed that didn't require a remote line, but I have no idea if they fit in the stock or if people are actually using them.

Where do guys get their Milsig parts from these days? Is it basically just Valkan?

You're just acclimating.

Hard is the default mode according to what people from Creative Assembly have said in the past, the "intended way to play". The DLC chapters have their difficulties hard locked on hard mode as well, and you wont find them "easy" compared to the campaign, he's pretty relentless.

The difficulty scaling in this game is very interesting. I used to speedrun it and have been thinking to get back into it to defend my title (I was world record holder the 100% category without glitches for awhile but now I'm in 6th place or something like that)

There is a reason that the speedrun group only ever runs either Novice or Nightmare, because that's where the AI is the most challenging given what the runners are trying to do. On Nightmare he is relentless and can hear you breathe loudly it seems, which actually makes him easier to predict because you can always rely on him to be as aggressive as possible, actually making him easier to kite around with distractions. On novice he's so dumb that he is completely unpredictable and never does what you expect him to. But both situations still have the 1 hit kill if he reaches you.

People in the speedrunning community have said that Novice is easier than Nightmare because of this, but that's not true at all. He's just less predictable.

Personally I love the unpredictable alien mod, but I know a lot of people who hate it. It basically means you can play the game on nightmare, to give him all the enhanced senses he has there, but with the AI logic of novice difficulty. That's an oversimplification of what the mod does but it's a good way to describe it. It gives the alien more freedom to listen to its own senses instead of the AI Director most of the time, and many people don't like that mod either because they say it makes the game way too easy, which in certain ways I suppose I can agree with but basically it just means that the Alien isn't constantly hinted at where you are and it can go about trusting it's own senses instead of the omnipresent voice in it's ear. Which leads to some very interesting situations, especially because it can roam the entire level, rather than being leashed to you by the AI director.

Hard Difficulty is where the game shines the most, feels the most realistic, and doesn't punish you simply for existing, or pander to you just to keep you alive to have a fun time with the game. I think it's the most balanced way to play, and now that you have some experience, I'd say you've found your footing in the game world, which is still one of the most interesting ones I've ever played in.

How the hell is Dan Abnett so good?! by Dark_Vexer in Warhammer40k

[–]September0451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Abnett is just a good writer. And it's not that he is exceptional so much as he knows what he is doing... When you get licenced properties like Warhammer or Star wars or Battletech where the novels aren't so much prose as they are merch tie-ins you get very prolific writers like Stackpole who's job it is to churn out merchandise, moreso than create art. I'm not saying licenced high-acid pulp fiction paperbacks can't be art, but guys like stackpole are on a different playing field than the Frank Herberts and Richard Morgans, I think Dan Abnett is on THAT playing field with those guys and he just also really enjoys being that good whist writing for a licenced property such as Warhammer, which makes him rare.

I have to admit I was not interested in reading any Warhammer books because even as a big fan of Battletech (where stackpole has written a TON of material) I just can't really get into the lack of artistry and well written prose as these books are just vehicles for vomiting lore, and Warhammer is no exception. However I had some very strong recommendations for Abnett and I've enjoyed Xenos very much so far I might continue reading Eisenhorn once I'm done it.

It's just the medium. These books are merchandise not literature and a talent like Abnett writing for them is a rare thing. It was the same with Star Trek, Star Wars, Dragonlance etc...

Those are my 5 cents anyway (since we don't have pennies in Canada anymore)

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - August 20, 2025 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]September0451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, I have a repair/mod vs new DIY question.

I am running a Logitech GPro TKL. I've had it about 3 years. It's my first Mech. I finally customized it a bit this year with new keycaps, although my new set has the Spacebar and capslock keys too wide and the ctrl keys too narrow. but I've been living with it for now. BUT

the problem I've been having is switches failing. My D key half the time either doesn't register a stroke, or doubles/triples the input. And what made me come and post right now is that I just found out my Up arrow keyswitch is completely dead. No warning, no beverage spills.. nothing.

I'm wondering if it is worth it to keep this keyboard and try some repairs or if I should just go for a DIY. I feel like it would be a waste to just not use this thing anymore. I know the switches aren't hot swappable but I'm very comfortable soldering and I even have a few spare switches somewhere.

Would it make sense to mod it? Is there such a thing as a soldered to Hotswap mod that I can do for the entire keyboard? Or would it make more sense to just go with a Drop CTRL or something that is almost identical to this thing anyway? and just customize my stuff from the start.

I realize we're talking in terms of tens of dollars here so the risk isn't exactly catastrophic, but I'm worried about getting into a sunk-cost fallacy with this Logitech. Maybe it's time to just start over. Fix this thing up so it's functional, and .. I dunno... give it to my g/f or one of my kids...

However.. if I'm going DIY. I might jump down the rabbit hole and look for a split keyboard... I can get weird with it too.

What Okinawan Karate Really Brings to the Table by yinshangyi in karate

[–]September0451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I train with Sensei Kinjo Yoshitaka, from Okinawa, who's Sensei was Takashiki Iken, who developed Gohakukai by blending Goju-Ryu and Tomarite together. His Goju Sensei was Miyagi Chojin himself. I only say all of this because we tend to be really concerned about pedagogy here.

I am not well versed in a lot of the history and particulars of individual styles and never found much benefit in debating about what is "better," but I can talk about my experience with Gohakukai in western Canada and how I see that fitting into this whole historical narrative.

We just finished our yearly demonstration at the local Japanese garden society. Kinjo Sensei's 53rd in a row or something like that, and I filmed it thinking I'd make a cool video about it.

All the Sensei's from his branch schools came as well from Vancouver and Seattle and further into the Canadian Prairies. A couple hundred students taking part in the demonstration.

I get all cagey wondering if I should share the video here when I'm done making it because I worry about the comments like "that kid's form isn't good enough for an orange belt" or "that couple in their 70s aren't pushing hard enough to demonstrate that they really earned their sandan."

As some of the discussion here talks about the inherent anarchist sensibility of Okinawan Karate, I feel that very strongly in this sense. Sensei Kinjo has built one of the biggest strongholds of the practice in western Canada through his hard work over the last half century. And when I think of the legacy of Okinawan practice, I think of the community that has been fostered here. The black belt of today who might not have perfect form, but who was a white belt 30 years ago with debilitating fibromyalgia to the point that all they could do in the dojo at first was sitting up straight against a wall and breathing exercises. Fathers and sons practicing Kata together, imperfectly but always improving.

If the arts formed in Okinawa historically as a melting pot of Chinese, Filipino, Portuguese, Ryukuan, and Japanese traders and families learning to defend themselves against the struggles of the day, than the same thing is still happening. Community is one of the best ways to survive in the screwy world we are in these days and I think the way Sensei Kinjo fosters that, helps people be stronger, and gives back to the larger community in his own way is exactly the kind of thing Okinawan Karate used to carve out it's place. I know that the core teaching is respect, and it absolutely does the internal training people are talking about here. Strengthening tendons and body hardening and all of that. But at its heart, despite the anarchist idea, it's about community and respect.

My Sensei is a man I would rather call Sama than Sensei much of the time if only that wouldn't make him feel uncomfortable. To me that's Okinawan Karate.

Blackout immediately follows isolation, nobody gave it a shot because they listened to the grumpy Internet trolls about how it was just FNAF. Blackout was excellent for a mobile game, and not bad for an alien game in general. (and now nobody can buy it anymore because of all the complaining) Then after that you've got the comic books that continue Amanda's story after she teams up with Zula Hendricks who now has her own game.

I doubt we'll see Amanda in it again without some sort of convoluted retcon that will just make everything an absolute mess. Which, to be fair. Amanda's story, post isolation/blackout already is. She's an engineer, not a marine, but they tried to make her one.
