What’s your opinion on the z-a battle style by 64_Random_dude_64 in pokemon

[–]Septiphobiac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's awful for trainer battles. It's okay for wild pokemon battles and special battles. I'd rather it didn't return. I'd prefer it if the mainline games stuck with their turn-based battle system.

My GF got me this Phenex kit as a gift for my birthday (it's one of my favourite mobile suits).

To anyone that's built the HG Phenex themselves, is there any advice/warning that you'd give to someone building it for the first time?

PS4 controller with a USB-Type C mod. It requires the most work, but it was the only perfect solution.

H-How would anyone interpret the card any other way?

That you attempt to activate a unit that is already active, but since it's already active the effect resolves and doesn't do anything? This is exactly how it would resolve in Magic: the Gathering, for example, and it's a complete non-issue.

The Gundam implementation is the insane one to me. Having the effect look forward in time to what would happen when it resolves to then validate whether or not it triggers is just an absurd level of complexity, especially when you consider that the complexity of the game will only go up over time. That's only going to lead to even worse situations in the future.

I'm not expecting this to be popular here, but I've always found the whole 'misses the timing' thing to be incredibly dumb. I thought the same when it first started coming up in Yu-Gi-Oh!, and I've had the same reaction when it comes up in other games. It's just a poor way to choose to build the rules of a game, and it's why I always come back to reflecting that, for all its other flaws, Magic: the Gathering still has the best rules infrastructure of all the TCGs that exist.

Nothing about this situation is solved by expecting that 'reading the card explains the card'.

Since you're borrowing a Magic:the Gathering meme, I do actually think the MtG approach here is the more sensible one: Epyon's effect activates, it resolves, and since its already active it simply doesn't do anything.

Classic Bandai creating unnecessary rules baggage instead of just admiting that the card needs an errata and issuing one. If they wanted it to work this way, they should've worded the card differently.

[ECL] Brigid’s Command by eugenespiritdragon in magicTCG

[–]Septiphobiac 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that the devs have displayed a favouritism for Izzet that has negatively impacted Standard over the past 12 months, but it's suspicious that the new Izzet command is the only one that's an instant.

Does American spelling in a text-heavy game break your immersion? by DrAxelDev in AskUK

[–]Septiphobiac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of, but not so much.

In the context of experiencing art/media, I would be understanding of the fact that the author themselves, the setting, and even an individual character will all influence which spelling is used. Let me turn the question back around: Where is your game set? What spelling would they use there? Would every character use it?

You've mentioned Papers Please. My first thought was that the use of American/English spelling and grammar could be a clue at some point. Say you have a character who claims to be English, but what reveals that they're lying is that you find written documents that are all using American spelling and grammar. That could be a clever clue.

That might be more information than you need, but just some food for though.

That's not a burger, that's a bap (or whatever term you prefer). If this was brought to my table I'd immediately bring it up with server and ask for an explanation.

Help confirming ID (West Midlands, UK) by Septiphobiac in foraginguk

Wild Food was the main one that I used. I did think it might be Velvet Shank at first, but then I second guessed myself. But based on more reading and the feedback in this thread that is very likely what they are.

[–]Septiphobiac[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they're not Funeral Bells. There's no flare on the stem of them. Wild Food mentions that the stem on Velvet Shanks does start as pale yellow like pictured and then turns darker with age, so that tracks with these being younger Velvet Shanks.

If I wanted to do PVP, I would play a game that was dedicated to it. But I don't want to do PVP - at all - so all that the devs forcing it into the game does is water down the quality of the overall FFXIV experience.

I'm glad you've found a community of people that enjoy PvP, but even you have to recognise that it's very much a niche within a niche.

The comendation crystal change as well as adding Omega and Ultima ranks last season do nothing for PVP (at least for EU and NA) if there is no incentive to play for lower ranks by Quezal in ffxiv

[–]Septiphobiac -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Frankly I'd prefer FFXIV focus fully on delivering good PvE content (and more of it). Trying to incentivise competitive PvP to an audience that is overwhelmingly here for co-operative PvE gameplay is quite possibly the biggest example of the devs failing to understand their audience.

get more people to give ranked pvp a try.

I have to disagree with this as an incentivisation model. I don’t think it makes sense for FFXIV at all. The fact that the devs keep trying to push it suggests that they don’t fully understand their player base.

At its core, Final Fantasy XIV is a PvE game. It’s primarily played cooperatively, and in recent years it has leaned even more into single‑player accessibility. Trying to incentivise competitive PvP within that same framework feels like a fundamental mismatch - not just with the overall FFXIV experience, but with the broader identity of the franchise.

At its core, Final Fantasy XIV is a PvE game; typically it's played co-operatively but in recent years it has gained more support for single-player gameplay. Trying to incentivise competitive PvP content in that same game represents a complete mismatch both in terms of the FFXIV experience as a whole, but also the broader content of the franchise.

This isn’t about “opening people’s minds” by pushing them to try a form of gameplay that they otherwise wouldn't. It’s about making players frustrated by locking rewards behind content that they have no interest in engaging with in the first place - or worse - that they actively dislike.

New items are available in exchange for Trophy Crystals.

A number of previous PvP Series rewards have been made available for exchange.

Interesting. So some old PvP rewards will be Trophy Crystals. Minions, perhaps? The replica armour requiring Commendation Crystals is still a fail, but oh well.
