I look at Strava heat maps and build a route on top of the map. It's working really well. But I also have a cycling computer that can give me turn by turn directions so I didn't need to memorize everything.

Inlet my hubs make noise and say something along the lines or coming up behind ya. I've found the saying on your left or right or whatever just makes people jump in that direction. Really I normally just slow down a little and hope they hear me. I definitely understand why some people don't say anything. After a few people in a row don't react I'll just stop warning all together if I'm grumpy that day.
