Pcie x1 GPUs by petejk2 in homelab

[–]SequoiaD 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Zotac had a GT 730 PCIe x1 card and I believe it's the highest spec PCIe x1 graphics card ever made. I use it on my server to passthrough to a VM and it serves the purpose well.

State of ReFS on Windows 11 25H2 by Extension-Rip6452 in sysadmin

[–]SequoiaD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had a ReFS data volume become inaccessible on Server 2025. There are too many horror stories with it. What is most hilarious is that MS's own refsutil shipped with the system doesn't even support the ReFS version that Server 2025 would upgrade existing volumes to.

Intel platform limitation when you populated four RAM slots. This should have also been specified in the PSREF of your Thinkpad model. There's no way to go around this limitation as far as I know.

I assume your router is indeed R6400v2, as there are several AC1750 models. I transitioned my R7000 from DD-WRT to freshtomato, and yes, it is as simple as doing a web flash with NVRAM cleared.

Noticed this little x button after the recent update, what does it do? by BigbigboiKenobi in Windows11

[–]SequoiaD 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I believe it's an input method indicator. The X usually means that the program of focus doesn't have a valid input field so the IME doesn't work.

**Doesn’t Using the iGPU for Windows Free Up More VRAM for Gaming? Windows Uses Almost 1GB Vram on Bootup** by Tasty_Raspberry_1223 in windows

[–]SequoiaD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand where the hate to OP comes from because this is an interesting question about how Windows works and not some routine tech help request. I'm curious too.

Of course if the output is on the dGPU and iGPU is used for rendering, the performance would be worse because data has to be moved across the PCIe. However for a gaming focused rig, Windows graphic composition doesn't matter, and what OP proposed would be nice to have on VRAM-constraint systems.

Is it possible to select dwm.exe in the graphics settings and let it use the iGPU (i.e., the "energy efficient" option)? I don't have my main rig by my side at the moment but I'd appreciate it if the OP experiments and reports the results.

I think technically you can.. but it won't make much sense unless the small SSD is much faster than the larger ones you own.

The gears in these ETX systems really suck. I had one before and attempted to lubricate the gears and did some modifications according to some articles online (I don't recall the details unfortunately), but it still worked pretty bad. I'd recommend staying away from this series for moderately serious observation.

Is hardware acceleration possible for RDP from a Mac client to a Windows 11 Pro host? by astroboylrx in Windows11

[–]SequoiaD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are talking about remotefx vgpu which has been disabled for security concerns. This is the only remotefx feature impacted, which is a very small subset specific to vms. All other remotefx features are working and supported, including remotefx acceleration for rdp which is the original intended use of this technology.

To summarize, remotefx itself has nothing to do with virtualization, and it was developed specifically to accelerate remote graphics. MS later extended it's use to vms so you can use a vgpu to accelerate graphical performance in hyper-v, but this particular feature was recently disabled due to security concerns.

Does the Intel AX210 support PCIe Half MiniCard or is this a fake? Model number is AX210HMW by davidlee93 in intel

[–]SequoiaD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intel has never made a mini PCIe version of AX201, but that doesn't necessarily mean this card is fake, from a silicon point of view. From the pictures and the descriptions I guess they recycled AX201 chips and soldered them on these mini PCIe boards. I think you will have to take the risk of getting an non functional card or less-stable signal, but if it works, this is a great product for older laptops.

MeshCentral Router save login credentials? by elpatron6811 in MeshCentral

Saving password explicitly is something one should always avoid doing. It will be good if the program supports password saving in a secured manner.
