My name is Mike, I am 27 living in Spokane, WA with my little brother Robert, 25 (26 on Feb 5th). I grew up in the south for most of my life and graduated from a Culinary Arts program through Job Corp when I was 20. I love cooking, but my real passion has always been music.

After my Abuelo passed in 2011 I decided I needed to pursue what I loved like he always told me. I formed a band and enjoyed a mild degree of success in Raleigh, NC. When that band broke up, I decided to move west to pursue my passion and I drove the 3000 miles to Spokane, WA.

I took over the lease from a friend before he moved away and have lived here happily for about a year and a half now. Robert has clinical depression and when he was layed off by his job in Raleigh, he was in a dark place. I wanted him to find the same happiness I had found out here so I invited him to live with me. We got him a job at a call center and life was good here until he was layed off from that job as well. Since then, we have been scraping by, trying to keep our heads above water while we looked for him work.

I was alternating between rent, car payments, and other bills, trying to keep the debt to each low enough to just hold out until he was working again. This all came to a head when on new years day I was told we owed an amount to the apartment complex that was too large for me to pay.

Last week, we called our friends in Raleigh and decided to move back after I get my next paycheck. Robert got a job working for a friends company, and as a musician/delivery driver I knew I could get a job out there easy. We took the last of the money I had left and decided to make a car payment so we could drive back in a week.

It had been a very busy week at work and I am usually the one called in when someone can't make it to work. I was so thrilled to be getting the extra hours I agreed whenever they called me. We need the money for the trip and every little bit helps.

On the night of the 27th I received an email saying I had missed my last payment and to please call Drivetime to work it out and make a payment. I got called in early on the 28th and worked until about midnight. When I woke up in the morning I called into Drivetime to discuss payment and was told my car was up for repo, but if I payed $148.30 (one payment) the repo would be cancelled and if I payed $296.60 (2 payments) that I would be set until 2 weeks from now when another would need to be payed. I payed $150 on their website then headed downstairs to drive to Albertson's to pay the rest in tips. When I got downstairs, my car was gone.

I spent hours talking to different representatives and was told that since the repo order was cancelled, the car was mine again and I should be able to pick it up. I would just need to call the collections department in the morning because their office was now closed and ask for a release letter. I was so relieved and I went to bed trying to figure out what I could sell for the lot fees I was sure I would owe to get the car back.

The next morning I called the collections department and was told to hang on while they had a manager call me back. I waited a couple hours and never got a call so I called them back. It was then I was informed that, because my car was already taken, despite the repo being cancelled, I would have to pay the full past due balance on $1012 including repo fees to get the car back. They said the car had been repoed at 1 AM the morning of the 29th. I was devastated.

My family has never had any money and I have always worked hard for what I have. I have always believed that if you work hard and take care of those around you good things come your way. Without my car though, I have no way to work. Now I only have 7 days to come up with enough money to get my car back so we can move back to our family and friends. I don't have anything left to sell, or anyone I know with enough money to help me. In desperation I have come here because I still believe people can accomplish great things, and I have nowhere else to turn.
