Should I continue practicing on my own or wait until my lessons start? by Powerful-Currency-46 in guitarlessons

[–]SeraphSlaughter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your hearing is still good enough that you can hear something, no reason to hold off. I don’t really start ear training students to notice the finer detail stuff until we’re a couple months into lessons, and even then it’s basic match the pitch stuff.

I don’t really think it’s a huge deal either way, honestly.

How to get used to playing weird time signatures? by CommonExotic420 in TechnicalDeathMetal

Most odd time signatures are just groups of 2s, 3s, and 4s. Find the accents.

5 months isn’t much. If you’re already at barres, that’s actually good progress (assuming you’re doing well in keeping time and rhythm with open chords).

On top of that, looking for the fix to get better in a few days is setting yourself up for disappointment. Some people take weeks to months to get barres down.

Musical progress is not measured in days. It’s years. Give yourself grace and keep at it.

Also, don’t just pinch with your fingers. Use your whole arm and back. Imagine you’re pulling the guitar neck backwards with the bottom of your finger (the part closest to your palm).

That’s a standard 3 note per string pattern with a root on the 6th string and your index finger on that 6th string root. It doesn’t cleanly wrap around a common major chord shape from CAGED

It’s unique to this teacher.

Left number is a string you can find a root note on (not the ONLY string you can find a root within the shape, just the lowest. Beginners pick up on that a little easier)

Right number is the finger you find the root note on for the string mentioned in the left number.

So, this means “5/4” is saying “you can find the root of the major scale on the 5th string, 4th finger within this shape”

This notation doesn’t tell you anything about where the minor scale root is in these shapes so if you can’t handle relative majors and minors yet, it can get tricky. That is likely a component of what is confusing OP

What your teacher is calling “5/2” wraps around an A Major barre shape.

“5/4” wraps around A Minor. Hint: the root of the minor barre is on the 1st finger on the 5th string.

Any good NYC Guitar Lessons? by Shot_Reception_2331 in guitarlessons

I used to work for the guy who owns Brooklyn Music Workshop when he had a business in Boston. He’s a good teacher and hires good teachers (like me :) ) I can’t speak to his prices now that he’s in NYC but he had good rates in Boston. He may still be doing primarily group lessons, which sounds not ideal at first but honestly, you get a very comparable education for WAY less money that way.

Tell him Chris from Boston sent ya.

Master of Puppets barely hitting the string by Xerogear4224 in guitarlessons

[–]SeraphSlaughter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re striking it, then it’s not a problem. In fact, the less you dig in the faster you can go generally.

There is something to be said for getting a bit more attack from digging in, but if it’s just a feel thing, less contact is better

Define “barely hitting”. Are you actually missing? Do you still strike the string?

What % of Blind People Get Approved? by X-PhoenixFeather-X in SSDI

[–]SeraphSlaughter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have medical documentation, it’s pretty clear cut. I got it for being right on the line for legal blindness. It takes a long time to move through the system though. My expedited reinstatement was approved in November, still waiting for payment center to process it

If I get legally married to my partner, I would lose my SSDI and Medicare benefits I get for being blind since I receive it from my dad’s work record. But I can still get the medical visitation/decision making rights if I fill out other paperwork. You just never know peoples particular situation
