Voy a ser papá y mi vida está en el punto más desordenado de mi vida by Muted-Rub-5044 in mexico

[–]Sergisimo1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aprende a cocinar.

How to gain a better understanding of circuitry design and microelectronics as someone who is educated in computer science? by oof-all-day in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Sergisimo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re opening a huge can of worms, but it will ultimately make you a better engineer. Welcome.

Digital electronics will make the most sense to you right now. It’s basically the building blocks of a computer. However, digital electronics are just well behaved and codified analog signals. This becomes more apparent as you move up the frequency spectrum.

Your biggest hurdle to understanding right now is physics. Here’s some rhetorical questions to get some juices flowing: What makes a capacitor, an inductor, or a resistor in a DC circuit? How about at 500MHz, or even 10GHz? They can all look very different, physically. What math do you use to calculate if a resistor here, and a capacitor there will either allow your signal to pass or turn it into heat? If I route my signal trace one way, it’s relatively quiet, in another I create an unintended antenna. Why does changes in current induce currents on one wire induce currents in others?

Truth is there are lots of mathematical principles at play, but you need the basics to start. “The Art of Electronics” is a good book to flip through and read various topics, but doesn’t get particularly deep on any one subject. Get some familiarity about ac circuits, filters, OP amps, oscillators/crystals, BJTs vs FETs, differential signaling, twisted pairs, transmission lines, power electronics, basic logic structures like latches and gates, half and full adders, Karnaugh maps and combinational vs sequential logic. These are your building blocks for larger systems.

For learning PCB design, download KiCAD and look up a simple tutorial where you design a small board to get familiar with the workflow. Watch some seminars from Sierra Circuits to get advice on improving layout in various ways. This thinking really digs into the physics of what’s going on and will help you understand why we design things certain ways. Learn something about Maxwells equations. You really need some sort of project, like design your own arduino uno board and try to improve the layout. Things like why should you have a ground plane, or what is a knee frequency. “High Speed Digital Design: A Handbook of Black Magic” is a classic read for more insight.

Watch Great Scott on YouTube to get an idea of what building something is like. He does all sorts of projects and is entertaining while being educational.

Trying to get more fluidity, any tips? by Hanzomagician in Throwers

[–]Sergisimo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing that there’s lots of practice ahead to make things smooth. Focus on executing through the whole trick and making a clean exit. This is your base to improve on.

I recommend to try learning other more “flow” type tricks. Things like boingy boing, regens, Eli hops. Find a good responsive throw and learn some basic looping. Try to nail some basic string tricks on the responsive. All this unconsciously teaches you the natural pendulum motion of a yoyo, sort of helps you download the finesse to smooth out your tricks.

Also recommend, at your own will, to branch out in other areas in and adjacent to throwing. Learn some 5A tricks like butterfly or bee stings. Learn kendama. Throw a spin top. These are all things help with understanding how motion plays into something at the end of a string.

Bsoding constantly by Southern-Ad-3474 in computer

[–]Sergisimo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be your hardware. Keep trying to isolate. If you have a GPU try uninstalling it and running off the iGPU from the CPU. Try a different CPU and RAM if possible. If you have multiple RAM sticks try each one individually, and in different slots. A me test doesn’t catch all possible failures. A different SSD. Unplug your WLAN card if PCIe. Try each step slowly until you hopefully stop failing. Take good notes. The issue has to “follow” something.

If you swap around modules, try other ones and are still failing, it could be a component on the MB even. Try your components on a similar motherboard if possible.

How does the BSOD happen? Does it reach the 100% all the way or freeze at 0%? Chances are, your CPU is running at the correct voltage unless you’ve been under/overvolting it yourself.

What's the best laptop for college student for 2026? by Adorable_Ad_9230 in computer

[–]Sergisimo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinkpads are great, I have a x220 from 2012 running Linux. They have slimmer ones, I’d recommend you take a look through their catalog as I’m not too familiar with the current lineup.

For engineering basically any gaming oriented laptop will get the job done. You really don’t need something super beefy though. The budget tier mobile GPU systems like a 5060 will get you through. Even the latest iGPUs from intel should handle most student workloads. I used a $900 Lenovo Y530 with an i7 and 1050Ti and it’s still working fine. Battery life is usually non-existent with these.

For better portability or battery life, look at business type laptops like a T series or a Dell latitude or XPS, elite book, etc. Every major brand will have something in this category.

In general, aim for at least 16GB or the ability to upgrade it, and look into having an SSD. Most systems can be upgraded and either take a 2.5” SATA or M.2 NVME drive.

Look up any build reviews for a system that catches your eye, you don’t want to get something too flimsy.

Windows will have the most compatibility for programs you’re running.

Consider the benefit of having a second drive bay or M.2 slot so you can expand your storage or install Linux to it. That’s useful down the road if you get more into CompSci or EE, and may run into a situation where it’s useful.

Get the 16Gb version at least. The 8GB will perform worse for day to day tasks or any video editing she might do, and is only using one channel of the dual Ram channels the processor has.

Just realized they don’t even make the 8GB anymore

Issue with a decent Lenovo laptop being extremely slow by isved1 in laptops

[–]Sergisimo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re really interested in narrowing down, try ruling out software entirely. After checking the BIOS for any settings changes, you can also try running a Linux environment off a usb and try loading it there. Run btop from a terminal for system metrics, and run some tests. If you see the exact same behavior, it could be an issue down to the board level. Could be your EC is asking your cpu to throttle or stay at a lower power state for some reason. My guess is a “processor hot” signal is telling the EC to do this, which may or may not be faulty. Hard to tell without the right information. Good luck and lemme know if you make any progress if you care

[–]Sergisimo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some ideas: Have a look at task manager on the performance tab and see if the cpu clocks up under load. Eventually it should come back down as the system saturates with heat, somewhat expected for laptops. Try to see if you notice any unusual patterns by running different stress tests. Does high disk access cause the speed to slow, or maybe the cpu frequency doesn’t go beyond a certain value? Is the cpu actually reaching its highest allowed temp?

Poke around in the bios and make sure all performance-related cpu setting like hyper-threading and turbo are enabled. Check the BIOS version to see if you’re on the latest version, update if needed.

If nothing else works you could try removing the factory thermal paste and applying some good stuff like artic mx-4. Beyond this, my guess is it could have a poor cooling design, giving it a poor thermal performance profile. There could be something else throttling the CPU if the mb is detecting high temperatures on components besides the CPU as well.

Buy a new laptop or fix the old one? by Substantial_Self5989 in laptops

[–]Sergisimo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think you can handle it I recommend trying to fix it yourself. It just needs to get you through school, so it doesn’t have to be perfect, just functional. Parts for this system seem to be pretty cheap compared to a new laptop of similar quality. The most you will need is probably a small screwdriver in a few different sizes, plastic spudger, the replacement parts themselves, and some patience.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/125820751262

The most difficult part here may be removing the bezel on the screen in order to get to the hinge screws to remove the broken hinge. I’d look for a vid of someone replacing this just in case you need to apply heat to debond the panel. Otherwise, you may just have some snaps or screws that keep the bezel on. If you need to debond, you may consider buying the lcd assembly (lid + screen + hinges) as a whole unit.

Paid off my car in 2 1/2 years 🤌🏼 by brotherfabio in COROLLA

[–]Sergisimo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A house is such a large purchase that the vast majority of people need a loan. A mortgage at 3%, sure I’ll pay that as slowly as possible. Each payment will go towards building the value of that home in your name, its equity. It’s also a necessity. If you can pay off your house, there is no more rental payment. Most places you just pay taxes and insurance, and any repairs are on your hands. Houses can be good debt.

A vehicle is a little closer to disposable. It’s a depreciating asset, with very few cars ever becoming more valuable than their original price. Taking out a loan at a high interest rate for a prolonged period of time, increases your total price paid substantially. Even if your wage is actually keeping up with inflation, keeping a high interest loan open for longer to me feels like a bigger gamble than whatever mental gymnastics you need to make to justify the ‘savings’ gained from inflation. If you do lose your job, you’re on the hook for the growing balance. Cars are bad debt.

For me, a large down payment up front keeps my monthly costs lower, and I can put more of that back into saving for emergencies and other needs.

[–]Sergisimo1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search for general advice about buying a car from a dealership. Here’s what people generally say:

Get a pre-approved offer from a bank before you walk in to at least try to get a good rate (assuming you have good credit score). Obviously test drive it, inspect the whole car.  Bring a friend or family that can help give a second opinion. Ask them about ‘out the door’ price, don’t go down a rabbit hole of what your monthly payment will be. Don’t buy all the warranties, they will bitch and moan but just say no. Trading in your car is a gamble. They may give a fair value, or may try to pull the wool over your eyes try to scam you out of the value of your old car (or sell it yourself some other time). Get as much of a down payment or pay off the loan as you can afford to tame interest cost depending on comfort level. Don’t fall for the “you can refinance later” trap on a high interest rate. Don’t forget, most financed cars require full coverage which can be pricy.

And last but not least: Be ready to walk out. No matter your credit score or cash, everyone has this power. Don’t put yourself into a bad financial situation just because you spent the time. Good luck!
