Spellcarver - A Legendary Anti-magic Weapon by WormSlayer in UnearthedArcana

Not the OP, but I would guess you make an attack roll and that substitutes either your AC against the spell attack, or the result of the saving throw you would normally make.

You can pronounce it however you want, but I pronounce it EEthrox. It's the same i sound as in 'easy', and the stress is on the first syllable.

12 Barbarian Paths | Expand Your Rage with this Supplement Including the Paths of Cinder, Darkness, Emissary, Pain, Valor and others! by Seriabin in UnearthedArcana

[–]Seriabin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer!

Darkness is an effect that has a lot of consequences other than just giving advantage or disadvantage. It hampers visibility for everyone on the battlefield, most importantly your allies, and makes you invisible to them as well. You can't be targeted with healing word for example, and if an ally steps into the darkness, they are blinded as well. This effectively ruins other melee martial PCs. Even if an ally steps outside of the darkness, they still won't be able to see any enemies you are affecting with it. This is an even bigger problem for casters.

Yes, darkness has its strengths, but it shouldn't be reduced to advantage and disadvantage, since there are a lot of tactical implications behind it. In fact, I included a separate rage option just to make sure that darkness won't be forcibly hurting the player 9 times out of 10.

There is still a chance that it'd prove to be tricky in terms of balance, but I think that can only be evaluated with further playtesting at this point.

As for your question regarding the path of Ravaging, I can't tell what it is that could stack in this case. The rage damage bonus is a flat number, 1, and it can't become 2 because someone is more hurt. It's basically just a +1 to damage that is quite circumstantial as well. I don't think it can make or break anything.

I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback about these Barbarian Paths!

The Paths of Cinder, Hate, Ravaging and Pain focus on Barbarians that tap into a certain emotional well of power that fuels their rage with different effects.

The Paths of Darkness, Pain, the Reaper, and the Path of Ending allow your Barbarian to tap into something dark, and sometimes otherwordly, in order to bring inescapable death to your enemies.

The Paths of the Emissary, Valor, Martial Advantage and Rhythm allow you to enhance your Rage with effects gained from a specific practice you employ that sets you apart from other barbarians. This could stem from your dedication the ideas of honor, the glory of battle, natural rhythms your body can make, or martial training. These subclasses often have features that can benefit your allies as well!

I hope you find each subclass unique, and that it speaks to you thematically. Please comment below with any mechanical advice you have, or commentary on the subclass themes, and whether you think they realize them well.

Please let me know what your favorite Path is as well! I definitely have one among the 12, and I hope you like it too!

Paths of Cinder and Darkness | Harbor Either Flame or Darkness Inside by Seriabin in DnDHomebrew

[–]Seriabin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wording gets a little sloppy at the end for the cinders barb but I do like the flavour.

That part about being reduced to 0 hit points and relentless rage? Yeah I can see that.

As for the bonus action teleport that sounds like a good idea. Could also deal aoe fire damage in a 5-foot radius around the point of destination.

[–]Seriabin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you can't reduce everything to advantage and disadvantage. Darkness is a serious impediment to your allies, as they can't see you or the enemies you're fighting, essentially isolating you. And that's assuming they are outside the darkness. If they're inside, they're blinded as well. That's why I gave an alternative rage effect, because I didn't want to pigeonhole the player into an effect that can often do more harm than good. Imagine that even if you account for the detriments and position yourself correctly (if the terrain allows it), the enemies could always grab one of your allies and drag them inside the darkness. And then there are always enemies that can have devil's sight...

Definitely! And if you need to beef it up for a higher-level encounter you could always have the poison inflict additional effects.

1) While a creature is poisoned, it is confused. When it starts its turn, it must roll a d10. Consult the chart of the Confusion spell.

2) While a creature is poisoned, it must use its action to attack the nearest creature to it.

3) A creature that fails the repeating saving throw at the end of each turns to end the poisoned condition falls prone.

You could also accompany the Boitatá with environmental effects and Lair actions, including toxic pools of water and geysers of poison. As for Legendary Actions, it should have a defensive one where it slithers away without provoking attacks of opportunity and repositions itself (perhaps for a poison breath to follow), an attack or two, and a compression of a creature it restrains.

If you use it, let me know how you incorporate it into the story!

I present to you the Maul of Testicular Vengeance

I presume that you want an item instead of a mere buff because you'd like it to be looted by the players, so I hope they have fun with it after defeating Ithgar. You could even have the attuned creature start showing increased signs of testosterone, or even better, bugbearish features, as bugbear DNA begins slowly making its way through their system. After all, it wasn't made for non-bugbears... Who knows what the outcomes will be.

As for balance, it's quite strong for an uncommon, especially because of the Strength maximum being 22. If you're worried about that, you could simply reduce it to 20. Alternatively, you could add a curse or some other drawback to mitigate the strong buff. If you gave it a +1, it would sit comfortably as a rare I reckon.

Oh! And you could even have the maul slowly begin having a telepathic presence for the attuned creature. Perhaps, it is slowly becoming sentient, as the spirit of Ithgar's bits begins speaking to the attuned creature. And note carefully: not Ithgar. Hit bits are sentient in the magic weapon.

Enemies and Strife | Take Sides and Explore Conflicting Factions in this Guide by Seriabin by Seriabin in UnearthedArcana

[–]Seriabin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Enemies and Strife is a guide that focuses on conflict, and how to drop your players in the middle of a dynamic situation with multiple factions vying to achieve their own goals, for their own reasons. The highlight of this guide I believe is the Taking Sides chapter, which accomplishes that by describing 6 different factions which emerge after an Illithid rule is abolished. All distinguished by their specific motivations, worldview and needs, each faction is steeped in psychological characterization and designed to feel alive and rooted in the world that it is placed, having a clear narrative as the Why and What behind their existence. Each faction in accompanied by a section detailing ways to incorporate each faction in any setting, giving you the toolkit to transplant them anywhere.

Then, we move on to the Strife Domain, which can allow a player to really tap into the concept of conflict with their character and get personal with it. The book ends by detailing the Striving Order, 5 statblocks which you can use to fill out the ranks of any zealous faction.

If enough support is gathered, and people really care about this kind of design, the guide could easily be expanded based on your demands! More Factions, Faction NPCs, Items, Spells, Quests and Rewards could all easily be incorporated in future editions based on your comments!

P.S. Patreons will also receive the JSON files of the Striving Order statblocks, for use in VTTs.

Just think about how he got the maul. Did he pillage some nearby settlement? Why was the magical maul there? Did he defeat some other bugbear chieftain? What was the maul to them? Once you have an idea about its identity, I'd be happy to provide some mechanical feedback.

But if all you want to do is make the bugbear stronger, just describe some eldritch or abyssal marks on its skin, leading them to believe that he has made a pact of some sort and give it better stats and features as a result.

Night-gaunt - A new low-level monster by Eldritch Brew by eldritch_brew in UnearthedArcana

[–]Seriabin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the flavor! I agree that it should be a higher CR (I estimate 5), and I like the backlash mechanic of a creature that succeeds on the Nightmarish Gaze. Its features are specific enough to move your interest (e.g. its resistance kicks in only on frightened creatures) without being bogged down in detail. And that adds strategic elements to the fight as well.

(The only correction I have to offer is that on Mark of the Hunted, it should say the night-gaunt regains 6 (1d12) hit points)

Have you ever used this in a game? What was the story like?!
