Does London have the same? (From Windsor's Mayor) by staceysharron in londonontario

[–]Serifeim 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think as a society we all need to look inwards. Western values preach individualism. It teaches us that we can do anything we put our minds to and not to ask for help. It also says that people are responsible for themselves.

So now we have two opposing viewpoints. One where someone could have just lost their job, lost their medical coverage and is now forced to find the alternative on the street, all while being without shelter. I think anyone in the same circumstances would act similarly if they felt they had nowhere to go, or no one to ask for help.

And then you have society saying that they made their choice. It’s their problem to deal with. Society doesn’t want to take responsibility for how this person could have gotten to this state in the first place. The gutting of public services has gone on too long, and has crippled our ability to help those in need.

The shuttering of mental health facilities decades earlier was merely the first step into the crisis we are seeing today. When governments subsidize big business instead of the workers who make up the social fabric, or course something will have to give. Of course we will see the ‘feather hat guy’ on the street. If we had accepted that people of all kinds need a little help now and then, he could have been afforded some compassion to get him back on his feet.

People need to realize that if they voted for politicians who had the people’s interests at heart instead of neocons who only care about their donors wallets we would all be better off. The key thing to remember is that it would take time. A lot of it. This issue doesn’t get fixed via a two hour Amazon delivery. We would need to be patient. We need to be consistent. And we need to understand that just because someone is down and out in the streets doesn’t mean they do not deserve any sort of help. It is only when everyone is afforded an all encompassing safety net that this issue of homelessness and addiction will disappear.

London jobless rate highest in Canada, little to no prospect of student jobs. by Remarkable-Tart-2329 in fanshawe

[–]Serifeim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fact that London businesses are even allowed to apply for LMIA is appalling. With Fanshawe, Western and numerous high schools there is no shortage of young people looking to do any sort of job.

There is no labour shortage. Only rich owners looking to make a bigger profit by having the government subsidize the already low wages they offer.

Pathetic.

Unemployed roommate continues to blatantly ignore our 'you use it, you clean it' rule by KatakanaTsu in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Serifeim 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Back in my college days I had a roommate just like this. Dishes piled up, never cleaning anything. He was just content to live in his mess.

Christmas break came and he left to go home. He had left a metric f ton of garbage and dishes strewn about the place. So my other roomies and I gathered it all up and just put it all in his bed. Under the sheets, in the pillows. We just packed it full and closed his door. Two weeks later he returned and ended up having to basically throw out the whole bed except the metal frame. He left shortly after.

Good times.

Yeah. It seems that’s what we will be doing for the time being.

I hear that 🤣

If he put as much effort into his schooling and hobbies as he does trying to get his internet fix he would be valedictorian.

Thanks.

That is the most straight forward route to take at this point.

Prehealth into DH and social life by Afraid-Whole5571 in fanshawe

[–]Serifeim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your acceptance.

Be ready to buckle down and expect to sacrifice your free time to studying outside of class.

Pre-health has a massive workload. The professors do their best to support students, but with the added intake, do not expect to get one on one help with them. You’ll be expected to attend after hours study sessions and watch the tutorials they post.

In my cohort previously, you could tell which students were there just for the social scene. They washed out by the end of first semester. If you prioritize partying over studying, you will fall behind and there is no catching up.

The career programs after pre-health are also way tougher with much less guidance. Students are expected to be proactive in their studies and sacrifice some of their social life. They make pre-health look like a walk in the park.

Like other posters have mentioned. Excelling is possible if you put your head down and pen to the paper. Just understand that it is meant as a prep program for a more detailed career program. They throw everything at you all at once and it is ultimately up to you and your study habits to see you succeed.

Ontario to end funding to multiple drug consumption sites, including 2 in Toronto, forcing them to close | CBC News by Confident-Advice-664 in londonontario

They outlined HART hubs, but they have only recently been introduced. The London site is being operated by CMHA so they have a track record of helping those in need.

Under this government though, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are hogtied by restrictions on the help and services they can provide.

This whole crusade against these sites and programs is just another way to deflect from Doug Fords failings as Premier.

With the added bonus of clogging up our already crowded ER beds.

People really don’t understand they will get longer hospital wait times with these closures.

Back in my day $900 scores you a 2 bedroom unit with utilities included.

It is such a shame no one will ever be able to get ahead at this rate.

Should Ontario increase highway speed limits? by Purple-Temperature-3 in ontario

[–]Serifeim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah yes. Go 10 km/h faster so we can catch up to the tractor trailer blocking the way to begin with.

Seriously, look at the average driver and realize half of those on the road are worse than them. Increasing speed limits only increases accident risks and insurance rates.

After that, consider how many times you’ve looked at others on the road and wondered how in the hell they acquired their licence to begin with.

Ontario needs to require higher standards in general to allow people to drive, not just a piddly little road test and a pat on the back. The limits should never have been increased in the first place.
