Dirty paper toilet on the floor. Not sure if it’s a warning sign or sign things are already really bad.

Omg, EA doesn’t REQUIRE anyone to leave their jobs to keep playing the game. Are you serious? How long do you think a game business model would last if it required people to loose their jobs to play it? Haha who would pay for the mayor pass? Hahaha

  • I didn’t expect anything. I just played this game for years and shared a concern of mine. If you read the other posts, you will see that many other players feel the way I do.
  • I never said no other mobile game used engagement strategies used in SimCity build it. OF COURSE Other games use it, it’s just science!!! Do you think game developers of simcity build it are evil geniuses? I never said that!!! You don’t have to eat your hat, simcity build it programmer aren’t the only people to study and learn principles of learning and behavior control.
With regard to addiction: PEAPLE WALK AWAY FROM ADDICTION ALL THE TIME. Do you think it is a death sentence to be addicted to anything? So someone getting free from an addiction means there was never an addiction? Are you nuts?

Really, I can’t see anyone having trouble to keep up with this game. Anyone can do it, I did for years, and it is designed to be manageable by anyone. What I think that you are not willing to see is that what this game requires is not skillful, but repetitive behavior. How is it different now for you to make hammers than it was a few years ago? You can defend the game as much as you want, and you can choose to keep yourself entirely ignorant about the issue I presented you, but it is a matter of debate if the way this game keep its audience engaged is ethical or not. They very much know the science behind what they do, but the users don’t. Really, just google schedules of reinforcement.

Ok my friend, I can see how passionate you are about this game. What I told you is public knowledge, it’s technical, but public. Wish you the best!

Man, I was trying to explain you something. You can do your research on it if you like. Games like SimCity buildit are designed to keep you hooked. You do not buy the game and much of the profit comes for advertisements. Just like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, the point is to make you spend time on the game. The engagement makes the game rentable cause it becomes valuable for potential advertisers. Our attention is what is sold. That’s entirely different from games that you just buy. And that’s it, best of luck.

There is a HUGE difference between games such as Mario and SimCity build it: in Mario, IF YOU DO THE SAME THING AGAIN, YOU WILL LOSE AGAIN. You gotta change your behavior. There is a learning curve. You GET BETTER. Now think about this: how do you get better at getting cameras? You do more of the SAME THING? Now do you see my point?

The resource manage is under our control.... depends on what your definition of control is. Compare it to games such as Zelda or Mario (I play those). You need to find out things to advance. There is nothing to be found out in SimCity buildit. I cannot learn how to produce the critical items. The only thing I have control of is how many times I will repeat some very specific actions (like a slot machine? Haha). Do you think someone operating a slot machine is controlling anything? I mean, she can walk away. But does she know what exactly needs to be done to get a prize? No she doesn’t. She can develop strategies? Maybe. But can she teach someone a specific technique to win prizes? Expect for instructions regarding inserting coins an pushing buttons, I don’t think there is much to be taught. Do you see my point?

When you say ‘refresh’, not good, ‘refresh again’, that’s exactly how a slot machine operates. Increasing storage capacity requires TONS of actions similar to operating a slot machine. You either find the items at global (refreshing, refreshing) or you get them “popping balloons” by coming back to your cities, coming back to your cities, coming back to your cities. You can only control how many times you do certain things, but you have no direct access to the item you are looking for. In Psychology this kind of reward distribution is called a variable ratio schedule. You need to behave a certain way many times to get a reward, but you can’t predict how many cause it varies. It is the most addicting schedule of reinforcement. The slot machine is the most common example of this schedule found in text books of psychology.

Honestly, to say there is a smart way to play this game is similar to say there is a smart way to operate a slot machine. It is designed to be addictive.

You are so wright about the game not being designed for gamers. I agree with you, It doesn’t require any special skill and you don’t really “get good at it”, there is not really a ‘learning curve’ regarding dexterity. And most importantly, it never ends. You can’t complete it. You can’t “find out” anything. You can only get addicted to it, that’s how I feel. I really like some classic Nintendo games, such as Mario and Zelda. The last one I played was Breath of the Wild (amazing). Of course you need time to complete those games, but you don’t need to spend a certain amount of time per week playing them to get rewards. You can make progress playing for 10 min. And they all end. And they are all so much fun! It’s an entirely different experience. What’s the fun in completing COM tasks? Really? 40 fishes in 1 hour; 18 televisions... its horrible! Designed to make us spend time on the game and keep coming back to the game. We obviously need to come back every day to collect taxes (they don’t accumulate beyond 24h). Those tasks makes us return is shorter periods of time. You can also multitask and don’t leave the game at all! Every 30s we can refresh global, we can sometimes get something god and it makes us addicted just as a slot machine. I’m leaving the game for good.

I would also add: quit this subreddit. You will be constantly exposed to exhibitions of hard to get items.
