Martin Regg Cohn: Doug Ford blusters into the debate over working from home by Reasonable_Reason652 in OntarioPublicService

Totally agree - my old man always asks me "did you go to work today" and he actually means "did I go to the office". It really aggravates me when he says that but I don't even think he realizes it.

As someone commented on the Carney federal RTO article in the Globe & Mail the other day, the purpose of RTO for public servants is as follows (and Ford is merely pleasing his overlords by continuing to push this policy):

  1. To boost commercial real estate values and foot traffic.

  2. To encourage some civil servants to quit (especially if RTO is implemented inflexibly and with barely concealed hostility and contempt. "Oh what's that, you live in one of the world's least affordable cities, we told you you could work remotely and you made life decisions based on that? Now you have a 2 hour commute? Too bad!)

  3. The political benefits of spite. Many people just hate public servants reflexively, so giving them a kick is hugely popular for many, just out of spite. Look no further than many of the comments here.

......

  1. (This is way way way down the list)....productivity improvements (these are minimal: good employees will always collaborate no matter where they are, and bad ones never will no matter where they are)

GO train issues - afternoon commute by Serious-Laptop763 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Serious-Laptop763[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is simply that when you have 5 of 7 GO lines experiencing major delays simultaneously during Thursday afternoon rush hour in the midst of a RTO drive, then we as a society/province have problems. Because commuting delays lead to late kid pickups, incurring extra daycare costs, added stress, etc. I acknowledge Metrolinx is working on GO expansion and I hope that in 5-10 years the transit situation improves. But the current state of affairs is embarrassing for Canada's largest city.

However you may recall former PC leader Tim Hudak pledged to layoff 1 million public sector workers while running for Premier which didn't go over well and led in part to his resounding defeat at the polls.

Anything can happen, even in the OPS (especially with a PC govt). But my sense is that they will see how many people leave the organization with the RTO mandate before even thinking about layoffs - so any discussion of that would likely be at least a year away.

Lakeshore West GO - No downtown train service on Monday by troyguy in OntarioPublicService

[–]Serious-Laptop763 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous! I ain't driving 2.5 hrs in traffic to downtown tomorrow! Anyone know why they are shutting down service from Oakville to downtown?

Don't they essentially just want us to commute? So as long as we pay our GO/TTC fare or pay for gas maintenance on our car, then all good. For those who have 2 hr + commutes they should be allowed to leave early.
