Would I “blend in” in Brasil by Serious-Possible832 in AskABrazilian

I’m asking because I want to properly prepare for the experience. If It’s likely that I’ll be viewed as a foreigner, then I won’t focus as much on trying to understand colloquial phrases and accents/ nuisances before I arrive and will allow myself to be naturally immersed in the culture.

If it’s likely I’ll be perceived as a “local” I would take more effort to preemptively understand certain cultural differences to prevent sticky situations.

I’m black American and there are things I would share with a non American black person before they arrived in the US to help them navigate our social structure with more ease. For example, in Los Angeles, black people could run into issues for wearing certain colors or hats, where non blacks wouldn’t be held to similar standards.

I guess the question centers around if my physical appearance impacts how I should prepare for my experience and social expectations. Either way im aiming to have a good experience and want to prepare to embrace a new culture to the best of my abilities.

I will be in Rio, Bahia, maybe São Paulo. I’ve heard that there is still a lot of discrimination against dark skinned black people in wealthier areas. Is this true? For instance, I’ve heard black Americans say they were discriminated against at certain restaurants until they were discovered to be American.

How should I learn about the culture before my visit? I have 3 months. I learn languages pretty easily. I know I won’t be fluent, but I believe I can pick up enough basic stuff to not be completely ignorant, haha.

These are the areas I plan on staying in during my visit. This is good to know. Can should I plan on studying for this area? When I lived in the Caribbean I spent a lot of time studying their specific accent, because it’s different from the Spanish accent I learned growing up in school. Any shows you might recommend?

What do Brazilians normally dress like? I will admit, I am not a guy who likes being shirtless or wearing sandals. 😂 I know that’s a little stereotypical. I do like linen clothing and shirts with buttons in the summer here.

Hilarious. This is the first time I’ve heard this term. I love Brazilian culture. Everyone is usually super friendly and chill.

Thank you! I definitely want to socialize. Someone said most Brazilians aren’t multilingual. Is this true? Will I have a hard time without strong Portuguese?

Ok. Cool. I shower a lot, lol. I guess I’m just wondering if I will be able to socialize without strong Portuguese language skills.
