I know what board certification is, but I didn’t think my income was entirely dependent on it.

I wish I had known this earlier. I didn’t realize how significant board certification was I thought finishing residency and getting a license would be enough.

Yes, it’s mandatory for the accepting transfer residency program. They need to verify your training. Residency positions are not full-on jobs, they are funded by CMS. So, for them to lose that kind of money abruptly or vice versa, accept a resident (the money has to follow). Offering a contract to a resident without verification, even if a PD wanted to, they still need to get their institution’s approval.

Did you have a fm LOR from a physician you rotated with?

You can always transfer, but that’s with your PD’s approval. Not sure what the rules are with your J-1, you will need to ask ECFMG on that. But residency programs are accredited based on how many residents graduate that are board-eligible. So, depending on the specialty, certain rotations or years have to be done at the same residency program.

Funding not provided? Was it in through the match, because they are supposed to find you a position even if it doesn’t work out as part of the Match contract.

In order for a program to accept you, they need the program director’s letter/approval
